Abstract: The present invention 10 discloses an illuminating recoil guide rod for use on a handgun 12 modified to include a highly illuminating LED or infrared light 26 for a night vision light source, a tilt or mercury switch 22 that will allow for user selectable starting angles of illumination when the firearm is drawn from the holster comprising a lens 24 , battery or batteries 30 , housing compartment 32 , mercury angle switch 28 , electronics 56, 58 and a manual on/off switch 28 . The illuminating recoil guide rod 10 of the present invention is completely unobtrusive and is activated simply by drawing the firearm 12 from the holster and raising the barrel 36 . The present invention provides for an additional element in the form of a wireless transmitter 56 and receiver 58 for illuminating the LED 26 only while a pressure sensitive pad 60 is depressed.

Abstract: Visual acuity is often used to assess vision through image intensifying devices such as night vision goggles (NVG's). Fewer attempts have been made to measure contrast sensitivity through NVG's. Such information would be useful to better understand contrast processing through NVG's under various stimulus conditions. In this study, computer-generated letter charts were used to measure contrast sensitivity through third generation NVG's for a range of letter sizes. The red phosphor of a standard color monitor proved to be an effective stimulus for third generation devices. Different night sky conditions were simulated over a 3 log unit range. The results illustrate the profile of contrast sensitivity through third generation NVG's over a range of night sky conditions. Comparison of measurements through NVG's to measurements obtained without the device but at the same luminance and color distinguish between effects of luminance and noise on contrast sensitivity.

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate and compare the possible changes in pupil size subsequent to panretinal laser photocoagulation (PRP) via conventional laser and pattern scan laser (PASCAL).Patients and methodsForty eyes of 40 patients with diabetic retinopathy were included. 20 eyes had a PRP via conventional laser and formed Group 1. 20 eyes had a PRP via PASCAL laser and formed Group 2. The participants underwent standard ophthalmologic examination at baseline. Automated infrared pupillometry were performed at baseline and month 1.ResultsThe mean pupillary measurements (mm) for Group 1 (in the order photopic, mesopic, and scotopic conditions) were 2.88±0.34, 3.38±0.40, and 3.95±0.38, and changed to 3.64±0.42, 4.18±0.42, and 4.58±0.48, respectively. There was significant increase in pupil size at month 1 (P<0.001, P<0.001, and P<0.00, respectively). For Group 2, they were 2.90±0.38, 3.43±0.36, and 3.90±0.40, and changed to 3.18±0.42, 3.74±0.36, and 4.10±0.38, respectively. There was significant increase in pupil size at month 1 (P=0.018, P=0.014, and P=0.014, respectively). The pupil size increased significantly in both groups in all illumination conditions.ConclusionWe have demonstrated via automated infrared pupillary measurements that PRP may significantly increase pupil size whether it is performed with conventional laser or PASCAL laser.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to optical devices enabling daytime vision and night vision of an external scene with, in both cases, the superimposed introduction, into an observer's visual field, of an image given by an image generator. The image given by the light intensifier of a night observation system is processed in the same way as the image given by the image generator, by an auxiliary image-combining optical system which mixes these two images before they reach the main image-combining optical system of the device through which, in night vision, the observer directly sees the external scene. The auxiliary image-combining optical system is designed so that, in night vision, at least the greatest part of the light coming from the image generator reaches the main image-combining optical system. Depending on the embodiment, this result is obtained either with a retractable semi-reflecting mirror or with a semi-reflecting surface selective in frequency.
