TL;DR: In this article, a spin trap was used to detect free-radical intermediates formed during in situ irradiation of TiO/sub 2/ and platinized polysilicon powders in aqueous solution.
Abstract: Spin trapping and ESR detection (with the traps ..cap alpha..-phenyl N-tert-butyl nitrone and ..cap alpha..-(4-pyridyl N-oxide) N-tert-butyl nitrone) were employed to detect free-radical intermediates formed during in situ irradiation of TiO/sub 2/ and platinized TiO/sub 2/ powders in aqueous solutions. Evidence for the production of hydroxyl radical (.OH) (formed in the oxidation of water) and perhydroxyl radical (HO/sub 2/.) (probably formed in a reduction step) is presented. Other spin adducts, attributed to decomposition reactions of the spin traps, were also found. The results suggest an important role for photogenerated .OH in many photocatalytic and photosynthetic processes at TiO/sub 2/ powders.

TL;DR: In this article, the magnetic properties of a series of isostructural compounds, {Ln(organic radical)2(NO3)3}, comprising a Ln(III) ion surrounded by two N,O-chelating aminoxyl radicals (3-nitronyl nitroxide-4,5dimethyltriazole) have been investigated.
Abstract: Numerous molecular compounds in which a paramagnetic Ln(III) ion is in interaction with a second spin carrier such as a transition metal ion or an organic radical have been described. However, except for the isotropic Gd(III) ion, very little is known concerning the nature (ferro- or antiferromagnetic) and mechanism of the interaction involving a Ln(III) ion. This study addresses the problem of the interaction between the Ln(III) ions displaying spin−orbit coupling and an organic radical. The magnetic properties of a series of isostructural compounds, {Ln(organic radical)2(NO3)3}, comprising a Ln(III) ion (Ln = Ce to Dy) surrounded by two N,O-chelating aminoxyl radicals (3-nitronyl nitroxide-4,5-dimethyltriazole) have been investigated. The experimental approach used to get insight into the {Ln-Radical} coupling occurring within these compounds is based on the knowledge of the intrinsic paramagnetic contribution of the metal ion. This contribution has been deduced from the corresponding {Ln(Nitrone)2(NO3)...

TL;DR: In this article, the formation of hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen atoms during the sonolysis of aqueous solutions was investigated using spin-trapping and electron spin resonance studies.
Abstract: Results of spin-trapping and electron spin resonance studies are reported that provide conclusive evidence for the formation of hydroxyl radicals (.OH) and hydrogen atoms (.H) during the sonolysis of aqueous solutions. Nonvolatile nitrone spin traps, 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), ..cap alpha..-tert-butyl-..cap alpha..-(1-methyl-4-pyridinio)nitrone (PyBN), and ..cap alpha..-4-pyridyl-N-tert-butylnitrone 1-oxide(POBN), were used. Experiments were carried out in which scavengers competed with these spin traps for the radicals formed. The formate radical and ethanol were used as scavengers since the reactions of HCOO/sup -/ and C/sub 2/H/sub 5/OH with .OH, .H, and e/sub aq//sup -/ are well known. As a final test, aqueous POBN solutions containing CdSO/sub 4/, a well-known e/sub aq//sup -/ scavenger, were sonicated with no decrease in the signal intensity of H-POBN adduct being noted. This was interpreted as indication that no e/sub aq//sup -/ was being formed. (BLM)
