TL;DR: In the hydrogen generation tests, the N-doped samples were clearly outperforming their undoped counterparts, showing remarkable efficiency not only under UV-B but also with UV-A illumination.
Abstract: We report the synthesis of N-doped TiO2 nanofibers and high photocatalytic efficiency in generating hydrogen from ethanol–water mixtures under UV-A and UV-B irradiation. Titanate nanofibers synthesized by hydrothermal method are annealed in air and/or ammonia to achieve N-doped anatase fibers. Depending on the synthesis route, either interstitial N atoms or new N–Ti bonds appear in the lattice, resulting in slight lattice expansion as shown by XPS and HR-TEM analysis, respectively. These nanofibers were then used as support for Pd and Pt nanoparticles deposited with wet impregnation followed by calcination and reduction. In the hydrogen generation tests, the N-doped samples were clearly outperforming their undoped counterparts, showing remarkable efficiency not only under UV-B but also with UV-A illumination. When 100 mg of catalyst (N-doped TiO2 nanofiber decorated with Pt nanoparticles) was applied to 1 L of water–ethanol mixture, the H2 evolution rates were as high as 700 μmol/h (UV-A) and 2250 μmol/h ...

TL;DR: A novel and versatile approach to the corrosion protection by use of "smart" laser-controllable coating is introduced and laser-mediated remote release of incorporated corrosion inhibitor from engineered mesoporous containers with silver nanoparticles in the container shell is observed in real time on single and multicontainer levels.
Abstract: We introduce a novel and versatile approach to the corrosion protection by use of "smart" laser-controllable coating. The main advantage of the proposed technique is that one could terminate the corrosion process by very intensive healing after an appearance of corrosion centers using local laser irradiation. It is also shown that by applying a polyelectrolyte shell with noble metal particles over the mesoporous titania and silica via layer-by-layer assembly it is possible to fabricate micro- and nanoscaled reservoirs, which, being incorporated into the zirconia-organosilica matrix, are responsible for the ability of laser-driven release of the loaded materials (e.g., corrosion inhibitor). Furthermore, the resultant films are highly adhesive and could be easily deposited onto different metallic substrates. Laser-mediated remote release of incorporated corrosion inhibitor (benzotriazole) from engineered mesoporous containers with silver nanoparticles in the container shell is observed in real time on single and multicontainer levels.

TL;DR: This mini review is a systematic description of OER activity in the state of the art Ni-based nitrides nanostructured electrocatalysts.
Abstract: Electrocatalysis is an efficient and promising means of energy conversion, with minimal environmental footprint. To enhance reaction rates, catalysts are required to minimize overpotential. Alternatives to noble metal electrocatalysts are essential to address these needs on a large scale. In this context, transition metal nitride (TMN) nanoparticles have attracted much attention owing to their high catalytic activity, distinctive electronic structures, and enhanced surface morphologies. Nickel-based materials are an ideal choice for electrocatalysts given nickel's abundance and low cost in comparison to noble metals. In this Minireview, advancements made specifically in Ni-based binary and ternary TMNs as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critically evaluated. When used as OER electrocatalysts, Ni-based nanomaterials with 3 D architectures on a suitable support (e.g., a foam support) speed up electron transfer as a result of well-oriented crystal structures and also assist intermediate diffusion, during reaction, of evolved gases. 2 D Ni-based nitride sheet materials synthesized without supports usually perform better than 3 D supported electrocatalysts. The focus of this Minireview is a systematic description of OER activity for state-of-the-art Ni-based nitrides as nanostructured electrocatalysts.

TL;DR: In this paper, a facile one-pot synthesis of ultrathin freestanding porous Pd nanosheets (≈2.5 µm in lateral size and 10 nm in thickness) was presented.
Abstract: Freestanding ultrathin 2D noble metal nanosheets have drawn enormous attention due to their potential applications in various fields. However, the synthesis of 2D noble metal nanosheets still remains a great challenge due to the lack of an intrinsic driving force for anisotropic growth of 2D structures. Here, a facile one-pot synthesis of ultrathin freestanding porous Pd nanosheets (≈2.5 µm in lateral size and 10 nm in thickness) flexibly knitted by interweaved ultrathin nanowires with the assistance of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) is presented. Nanoparticles attachment and subsequent self-assembly in the synthetic process are responsible for the formation of such intriguing nanostructures. Moreover, finely controlling the pH value of the precursor solution leads to yield different Pd nanostructures with tunable dimensionalities, including 3D nanoflowers, 2D nanosheets, and 1D nanochains. Owing to the unique structural features, the obtained freestanding porous Pd nanosheets exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability towards formic acid oxidation compared to those of other dimensional counterparts and commercial Pd black.
