Abstract: Enhancing noisy speech recognition accuracy by receiving geotagged audio signals that correspond to environmental audio recorded by multiple mobile devices in multiple geographic locations, receiving an audio signal that corresponds to an utterance recorded by a particular mobile device, determining a particular geographic location associated with the particular mobile device, selecting a subset of geotagged audio signals and weighting each geotagged audio signal of the subset based on whether the respective audio signal was manually uploaded or automatically updated, generating a noise model for the particular geographic location using the subset of weighted geotagged audio signals, where noise compensation is performed on the audio signal that corresponds to the utterance using the noise model that has been generated for the particular geographic location.

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel technique for estimating the signal power spectral density to be used in the transfer function of a microphone array post-filter. The technique is a modification of the existing Zelinski post-filter, which uses the auto- and cross-spectral densities of the array inputs to estimate the signal and noise spectral densities. The Zelinski technique, however, assumes zero cross-correlation between noise on different sensors. This assumption is inaccurate in real conditions, particularly at low frequencies and for arrays with closely spaced sensors. In this paper we replace this with an assumption of a theoretically diffuse noise field, which is more appropriate in a variety of realistic noise environments. In experiments using noise recordings from an office of computer workstations, the modified post-filter results in significant improvement in terms of objective speech quality measures and speech recognition performance.

Abstract: An improved FM communication system is disclosed in which noise bursts and pops in the audio output of the receiver, due to weak and Rayleigh-faded signals, are minimized by selectively attenuating the audio signal in the receiver. The amount and rate of attenuation for the receiver noise reduction circuits is determined by a control signal derived form either the average discriminator noise at frequencies above 3 kHz, or from a received RF signal strength indicator, or a combination of both. The audio output is attenuated during weak signals or Rayleigh fades only when the attenuation control signal increases above a predetermined signal-to-noise ratio threshold. Also described are further improvements to noise attenuation devices used in combination with the receiver noise reduction circuits to enhance audio quality in particular applications, e.g., FM repeater systems which may incorporate multiple transmitters in a simulcast configuration.

Abstract: This study used empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for filtering power line noise in electrocardiogram signals. When the signal-to-noise (SNR) is low, the power line noise is separated out as the first intrinsic mode function (IMF), but when the SNR is high, a part of the signal along with the noise is decomposed as the first IMF. To overcome this problem, we add a pseudo noise at a frequency higher than the highest frequency of the signal to filter out just the power line noise in the first IMF. The results are compared with traditional IIR-based bandstop filtering. This technique is also implemented for filtering power line noise during enhancement of stress ECG signals.
