TL;DR: An electronic controller based on a digital implementation of transversal filters using a modification of the Widrow-Hoff Least-Mean-Squared Algorithm for active noise reduction is described.
Abstract: The active reduction of noise is an application of the principle of superposition in which an unwanted noise signal is detected by a microphone and processed by an electronic controller to produce an equal amplitude, 180° out-of-phase cancellation signal. The signal is then appropriately amplified and injected back into the space by a loudspeaker. This paper describes an electronic controller based on a digital implementation of transversal filters using a modification of the Widrow-Hoff Least-Mean-Squared Algorithm. In the case of active noise reduction there is no signal to enhance and all of the detected input must be cancelled. Further, the time required for the physical acoustic wave must be taken into consideration for the system to work.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors found that males responded to masking tones by shifting song frequencies after an average of 66.4 seconds from tone onset, whereas frequency shifts in the presence of nonmasking tones occurred only after a average of 95.8 seconds.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for detecting voice activity in an audio signal comprises the steps of determining an average peak value (703, AP) representing an envelope of the audio signal, determining a running instance of audio signal standard deviation (702), which corresponds to one of a number of overlapping time intervals, and updating a power density function (PDF) by adding instances of noise to the PDF.
Abstract: A method (501, 502) of detecting voice in an audio signal comprises the steps of determining an average peak value (703, AP) representing an envelope of the audio signal, determining a running instance of audio signal standard deviation (702), which corresponds to one of a number of overlapping time intervals, and updating a power density function (PDF) by adding instances of noise to the PDF if the average peak of the audio signal exceeds the current level of the audio signal by a certain amount and if the current standard deviation value falls below a threshold for a predetermined time interval. A noise floor (NF) is located based on the mean value of the PDF (501), and, if the audio signal sustains a power level exceeding the noise floor, voice activity is determined to be present in the audio signal (502). The PDF is updated by a low confidence factor (1206) if all of the standard deviation values calculated during a certain period of time are below the threshold value and by a high confidence factor (1204) if all standard deviation values within a certain longer period of time period are below the threshold value.

TL;DR: Noise in animal housing facilities is an environmental variable that can affect hearing, behavior and physiology in mice and attempts to reduce noise should concentrate on controlling sounds produced by in-room activities and experimenter traffic to reduce the variability of research outcomes and improve animal welfare.
Abstract: Noise in animal housing facilities is an environmental variable that can affect hearing, behavior and physiology in mice. The authors measured sound levels in two rodent housing rooms (room 1 and room 2) during several 24-h periods. Room 1, which was subject to heavy personnel traffic, contained ventilated racks and static cages that housed large numbers of mice. Room 2 was accessed by only a few staff members, contained static cages only and housed fewer mice. In both rooms, background sound levels were usually about 80 dB, and transient noises caused sound levels to temporarily rise 30-40 dB above the baseline level; such peaks occurred frequently during work hours (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM) and infrequently during non-work hours. Noise peaks during work hours in room 1 occurred about two times as often as in room 2 (P = 0.01). Use of changing stations located in the rooms caused background noise to increase by about 10 dB. Loud noise and noise variability were attributed mainly to personnel activity. Attempts to reduce noise should concentrate on controlling sounds produced by in-room activities and experimenter traffic; this may reduce the variability of research outcomes and improve animal welfare.

TL;DR: In this article, a gaming machine in a gaming establishment enhances its game sounds by attenuating ambient noise in the establishment, which includes a microphone, processing circuitry, and an audio speaker.
Abstract: A gaming machine in a gaming establishment enhances its game sounds by attenuating ambient noise in the establishment. The gaming machine includes a microphone, processing circuitry, and an audio speaker. The microphone detects ambient noise and generates a noise signal from the sensed ambient noise. The processing circuitry generates an anti-noise signal from the noise signal and adds the anti-noise signal to a game sound signal generated by the gaming machine to produce an output signal. The audio speaker is driven with the output signal.
