TL;DR: A functional reorganization of cognitive dynamics supporting successful task performance in dual-task conditions is suggested, despite no reliable changes in mean or standard deviations for either task.
Abstract: Cognitive performance exhibits patterns of trial-to-trial variation that can be described as 1/f or pink noise, as do repeated measures of locomotor performance. Although cognitive and locomotor performances are known to interact when performed concurrently, it is not known whether concurrent performance affects the tasks' pink noise dynamical structure. In this study, participants performed a cognitive task (repeatedly producing a temporal interval) and a motor task (walking on a treadmill) in single- and dual-task conditions. In single-task conditions both tasks exhibited pink noise structure. For concurrent performance the dynamical structure of the cognitive task changed reliably in the direction of white (random) noise. The dynamical structure of locomotion remained pink noise. The change in cognitive dynamics occurred despite no reliable changes in mean or standard deviation measures for either task. The results suggest a functional reorganization of cognitive dynamics supporting successful task performance in dual-task conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, the program audio signals and the noise signals are separated into a plurality of frequency bands, for example three bands, the envelope of which are demodulated and the derived demodulation signals are instantaneously compared to then control the transfer characteristics of the respective bands of the equalizer.
Abstract: To improve the fidelity of reproduction of automobile radios during conditions of extraneous in the passenger compartment, noise signals are derived, for example from a microphone installed in the engine compartment of the vehicle The audio program signals are conducted through a multichannel equalizer; the program audio signals and the noise signals are separated into a plurality of frequency bands, for example three bands, the envelope of which are demodulated and the derived demodulation signals are instantaneously compared to then control the transfer characteristics of the respective bands of the equalizer in accordance with the derived comparison between the respective bands of the noise and program signals Preferably, amplitude, change of transfer amplitude and rate of change is controlled by weighting the comparison signals and the rate of change thereof in relation to the frequency bands and the extent of change of the signals

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated circuit for implementing at least a portion of a personal audio device may include an output and a processing circuit, where the output may provide an output signal to a transducer including both a source audio signal for playback to a listener and an anti-noise signal for countering the effect of ambient audio sounds in an acoustic output of the transducers.
Abstract: An integrated circuit for implementing at least a portion of a personal audio device may include an output and a processing circuit. The output may provide an output signal to a transducer including both a source audio signal for playback to a listener and an anti-noise signal for countering the effect of ambient audio sounds in an acoustic output of the transducer. The processing circuit may implement an adaptive noise cancellation system that generates the anti-noise signal to reduce the presence of the ambient audio sounds heard by the listener by adapting, based on a presence of the source audio signal, a response of the adaptive noise cancellation system to minimize the ambient audio sounds at the acoustic output of the transducer, wherein the adaptive noise cancellation system is configured to adapt both in the presence and the absence of the source audio signal.

TL;DR: Pitch perception, examined by discrimination and matching, was found to correspond to spectral frequency in quiet and fundamental frequency in noise, suggesting a pitch processor that integrates over time (synthetic mode) in noise and analyzes spectral components (analytic modes) in quiet.
Abstract: Pitch perception was studied with respect to nonsimultaneous successive harmonics of fundamentals in quiet and noise. Stimuli consisted of three nonoverlapping sine waves each of 40‐msec duration. Pitch perception, examined by discrimination and matching, was found to correspond to spectral frequency in quiet and fundamental frequency in noise. The results suggest a pitch processor that integrates over time (synthetic mode) in noise and analyzes spectral components (analytic mode) in quiet. The findings are discussed with respect to current theories of pitch perception and auditory integrative functions. The findings are thought to be particularly relevant to analytic and synthetic modes of pitch perception.
