TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reexamined the hypothesis that air pollution is a major source of some water pollution trace elements in Lake Michigan and assessed the overall transfer efficiency of pollution from air to the lake.
Abstract: The hypothesis that air pollution is a major source of some water pollution trace elements in Lake Michigan (Winchester and Nifong, 1971) is reexamined. Hazards evaluation techniques are used to assess the overall transfer efficiency of pollution from air to the lake. This efficiency was found to be at least 25%, which supports the hypothesis.

TL;DR: The recognition of the need for environmental management in Hawaii to maintain its pristine image is evident not only in the millions of dollars presently being expended on pollution control facilities but also by the fact that Hawaii has become the first state to establish land-use zoning for the entire state as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The Hawaii Islands still retain the image of a pristine tropical paradise, although environmental pressures can be observed in some locations, particularly on the island of Oahu, where 83% of the state's nearly 800,000 inhabitants reside. Hawaii's water quality standards for coastal waters are readily adaptable to point sources of pollution but they are relatively ineffective in controlling nonpoint pollution sources such as sediment and nutrients from urban and agricultural runoff which can be detrimental to the island's shoreline coral beds as well as accelerating eutrophication of the receiving waters. Nonpoint pollution sources are best controlled by proper land use management practices. The recognition of the need for environmental management in Hawaii to maintain its pristine image is evident not only in the millions of dollars presently being expended on pollution control facilities but also by the fact that Hawaii has become the first state to establish land-use zoning for the entire state.

TL;DR: In this article, the value and use of soil maps in predicting potential areas of water pollution from runoff and erosion is discussed, and small scale maps of the world are used to show how soil maps can be interpreted and used.
Abstract: Evidence is presented to show the numerous sources of nutrient enrichment of natural waters. Factors affecting soil and water losses and their relationship to water pollution are discussed. The value and use of soil maps in predicting potential areas of water pollution from runoff and erosion is discussed. Small scale maps of the world are used to show how soil maps can be interpreted and used.
