Abstract: Among many coloured norbornadienes which have been synthesized bearing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents, the 2,3-diphenyl-5-methoxycarbonyl-6-propionly derivative was found to satisfy many important requirements for the chemical conversion of solar light energy because of its visible light absorption, a high quantum yield for its photocycloaddition to the corresponding quadricyclane and a rapid and complete reversion of the quadricyclane to the norbornadiene with an acid catalyst

TL;DR: In this article, the order-disorder phase transition in norbornadiene (bicyclo[2.1]hepta-2,5-diene) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry, variable-temperature infrared and Raman spectroscopies.
Abstract: Differential scanning calorimetry, variable-temperature infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and variable-pressure Raman spectroscopy have been used to study the order-disorder phase transition in norbornadiene (bicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene). In the calorimetric measurements, the phase transition occurred at 201 K on'heating and at 175 K on cooling, accompanied by an average entropy change of 41.6 J K -1 mol -1 . The large hysteresis of the phase transition was also observed in variable-temperature vibrational spectroscopic studies. The spectra suggest that the unit cell of the low-temperature phase is tetragonal, containing either two or four molecules. The same phase transition was induced by the application of high pressure, occurring at 6.4 (±1.0) kbar at room temperature

TL;DR: In this article, NMR data showed that the molecular configuration consists of a rhodium atom coordinated by a bidentate diene, a Bidentate amidino group, a HgCl ligand and a N atom which bridges the Rh-Hg bond.

TL;DR: In this paper, photo-induced electron transfer isomerization of binary norbornadiene derivatives was investigated using phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene or N -methyl carbazole as sensitizers.
Abstract: Some norbornadiene derivatives and novel covalently bonded electron donor (carbazole)—electron acceptor (norbornadiene) binary systems with different chain lengths were synthesized for the study of solar energy storage. Using phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene or N -methylcarbazole as sensitizers, photo-induced electron transfer isomerization of norbornadiene derivatives was investigated. The results of photochemical and photophysical studies, especially the chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization and flash photolysis, have provided direct evidence of the existence of radical-ion pair intermediates, which is in accord with an electron transfer mechanism. The intramolecular electron transfer isomerization of binary norbornadiene compounds to their isomeric quadricyclanes was achieved and the relationship between the chain length and conformation of binary compounds was discussed.
