TL;DR: In this article, the reactivity of RuCl2(PPh3)2(3,5-Me2piperidine) complex 1, was investigated for ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of NBE and norbornadiene (NBD) in the presence of EDA in CHCl3.
Abstract: The reactivity of the new complex [RuCl2(PPh3)2(3,5-Me2piperidine)], complex 1, was investigated for ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene (NBE) and norbornadiene (NBD) in the presence of ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) in CHCl3. The aim is to observe the combination of PPh3 and an amine as ancillary ligands concerning the steric hindrance and the electronic perturbation in the properties of the N-bound site when replacing the amines. Thus, the results with 1 were compared to the results obtained when the amine is piperidine (complex 2). Reaction with 1 provides 70% yield of isolated polyNBE (Mn = 8.3 × 104 g/mol; PDI = 2.03), whereas 2 provides quantitative reaction (Mn = 1.2 × 105 g/mol; PDI = 1.90) with [NBE]/[Ru] = 5000, [EDA]/[Ru] = 48 and 1.1 μmol of Ru for 5 min at 25 °C. The resulting polymers showed c.a. 62% of trans-polyNBE, determined by 1H NMR, and Tg = 32 °C, determined by DSC and DMTA. For ROMP of NBD, 1 showed quantitative yield with PDI = 2.62 when [NBD]/[Ru] = 5000 for 20 min at 25 °C, whereas the reaction with 2 reached 55% with PDI = 2.16 in the same conditions. It is concluded that the presence of the two methyl groups in the piperidine ring provides an increase in the induction period to produce the Ru-carbene species justifying better polyNBE results with 2, and a greater amine ⟶ σ Ru ⟶ π monomer synergism which contributed to the best activation of less tensioned olefin as NBD.

TL;DR: In the present study, anionic polymerization techniques were employed for the synthesis of low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers bearing norbornenyl end groups that were characterized by SEC, MALDI-TOF and NMR spectroscopy.
Abstract: Branched polymers are a valuable class of polymeric materials. In the present study, anionic polymerization techniques were employed for the synthesis of low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers bearing norbornenyl end groups. The macromonomers were characterized by SEC, MALDI-TOF and NMR spectroscopy. Subsequent ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of the macromonomers using ruthenium catalysts (Grubbs catalysts of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations) afforded the corresponding polymacromonomers. The effects of the macromonomer molecular weight, the type of the catalyst, the nature of the solvent, the monomer concentration and the polymerization temperature on the molecular characteristics of the branched polymers were examined in detail. The crystallization behavior of the macromonomers and the corresponding polymacromonomers were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability and the kinetics of the thermal decomposition of the samples were also studied by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The activation energies of the thermal decomposition were analyzed using the Ozawa⁻Flynn⁻Wall and Kissinger methodologies.

TL;DR: In this article, the first synthesis of comb-polymers from end-functi cation was reported, where the end-functionalized polymers were converted to hydroxyl-and subsequently norbornene-terminated macromonomers.
Abstract: Using nonliving bis(phenoxyimine)titanium catalysts activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO) in the presence of propylene, allyl-terminated syndiotactic polypropylene macromonomers with varying tacticity ([rrrr] = 0.80 and 0.94) and molecular weight (Mn = 3600 and 5600 g/mol) were produced. The end-functionalized polymers were converted to hydroxyl- and subsequently norbornene-terminated macromonomers. Two series of syndiotactic polypropylene comb-polymers were synthesized through metathesis polymerization of the norbornene-functionalized polypropylene. The molecular weight (Mn = 46 000–172 000 g/mol) and polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.21–1.89) of the comb polymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), melting temperature (Tm) and crystallization temperature (Tc) were determined and both were observed to decrease with increasing conversion to poly(macromonomer). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first synthesis of comb-polymers from end-functi...

TL;DR: In this paper, a norbornene is condensed with cyclopentadiene to obtain a 1,4, 5, 8,-dimethano-1,2,3, 4, 4a,5,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene derivative.
Abstract: PURPOSE: A random copolymer excellent in transparency, heat resistance, thermal aging resistance, chemical resistance, solvent resistance, dielectric property and mechanical properties such as rigidity, comprising ethylene and a specified octahydronaphthalene derivative. CONSTITUTION: A norbornene is condensed with cyclopentadiene to obtain a 1,4, 5,8,-dimethano-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene (B) of formula I (wherein R 1W2 are each H, an alkyl or a halogen). Ethylene is copolymerized with component B at a molar ratio of 90:10W10:90 in a hydrocarbon medium (e.g., hexane) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a hydrocarbon-soluble compound (e.g., VOCl 3 ) and a halogen-containing organoaluminum compound and having an Al/V molar ratio of 1W30 to obtain the titled random copolymer in which the component B-derived unit mainly has a structure of formula II and which has an intrinsic viscosity [η] as measured in decalin at 135°C of 0.3W10dl/g.
