Metal catalysts for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene

Abstract: A full literature and patent account (about 100 references) is given on work describing the vinyl polymerization to homo-polynorbornene. The interest in vinyl homo-polynorbornene is driven by its dielectric and mechanical properties for the technical application as an interlevel dielectric in microelectronics applications. The norbornene/olefin copolymerization is covered to some extent for comparison. The metal catalysts are presented and important polymer product properties are emphasized.

Palladium-catalyzed direct 2-alkylation of indoles by norbornene-mediated regioselective cascade C-H activation.

Abstract: A palladium-catalyzed direct 2-alkylation reaction of free N-H indoles has been developed. This reaction relies on a norbornene-mediated cascade C–H activation process at the indole ring, which features high regioselectivity and excellent functional group tolerance. The reaction represents the first example for a generally applicable, direct C–H alkylation of indole at the 2-position.

Evidence that SCS Pincer Pd(II) Complexes are only Precatalysts in Heck Catalysis and the Implications for Catalyst Recovery and Reuse

Abstract: SCS-pincer Pd(II) complexes have been covalently immobilized onto porous silica, cross-linked polymer (Merrifield resin) and soluble poly(norbornene) supports via either amide or urea linkages and evaluated in the Heck coupling of iodobenzene with n-butyl acrylate. Kinetic experiments and poisoning studies indicate that in all cases the pincer complexes merely act as precatalysts. Contrary to literature reports, there is no evidence for catalysis by the intact amide-linked SCS-Pd(II) complexes under any conditions studied here.

Aziridination of alkenes and amidation of alkanes by bis(tosylimido)ruthenium(VI) porphyrins. A mechanistic study

Abstract: Bis(tosylimido)ruthenium(VI) porphyrins, [RuVI(Por)(NTs)2] (Por = TPP, TTP, 4-Cl-TPP, 4-MeO-TPP, OEP), were prepared in 60−74% yields by treatment of [RuII(Por)(CO)(MeOH)] with (N-(p-tolylsulfonyl)imino)phenyliodinane (PhINTs) in dichloromethane. In dichloromethane containing pyrazole, they reacted with alkenes or alkanes to give tosylamidoruthenium(IV) porphyrins, [RuIV(Por)(NHTs)(pz)], in about 75% yields. The reactions of [RuVI(TPP)(NTs)2] and [RuVI(OEP)(NTs)2] with styrene, para-substituted styrenes, norbornene, cyclooctene, and β-methylstyrene afforded the corresponding N-tosylaziridines in 66−85% yields. The aziridination of cis-stilbene and cis-β-methylstyrene by [RuVI(Por)(NTs)2] is nonstereospecific with a partial loss of the alkene stereochemistry.
