TL;DR: In this article, a synthetic platform for the preparation of various norbornenyl (Nb) containing reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents has been developed.
Abstract: A synthetic platform for the preparation of various norbornenyl (Nb) containing reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents has been developed. The design of the chain transfer agents (CTAs) is based on the desymmetrization of α,α′-dibromo-p-xylene by monosubstitution with an alkoxide anion and subsequent replacement of the residual bromine atom in the benzylic bromide to create several series of RAFT CTA including trithiocarbonate, xanthate and dithiobenzoate CTAs, allowing for the possibility to introduce other functional groups besides Nb, such as an allyl group. While a norbornene functionality was chosen as most reactive functional group toward thiols in radical-mediated thiol–ene chemistry, an allyl group was introduced for the sake of direct comparison of the double bond reactivity in the thiol–ene reaction. Control of the radical polymerization of acrylates, styrene and vinyl acetate has been achieved by using this novel family of CTAs. The results indicate that the Nb group rem...

TL;DR: In this article, a ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) initiated by a Ru−alkylidene catalyst bound to the surface by means of the alkylidene ligands was formed on Si(100).
Abstract: Thin films of polymers synthesized from strained olefins were formed on Si(100) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) initiated by a Ru−alkylidene catalyst bound to the surface by means of the alkylidene ligands. Specifically, a mixture of 7-octenyltrichlorosilane (3) and octyltrichlorosilane (4) was deposited onto Si/SiO2 surfaces via contact printing, and this assembly was subsequently treated with RuCl2(PCy3)2(CHPh) (1). The resulting surface-tethered Ru alkylidene complex reacts with norbornene derivatives to give thin polymer films. The growth of the polymer film, as monitored by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), is strongly influenced by the initial concentration of the catalyst at the surface and by the monomer reactivity. The catalyst concentration at the Si/SiO2 surface was controlled by adjusting the relative ratio of 3 and 4 in the “primer” used in the contact-printing step. These studies revealed that the success of the catalyt...

TL;DR: The meta-C-H arylation of free phenylacetic acid was realized using 2-carbomethoxynorbornene (NBE-CO2 Me) as a transient mediator and both the modified norbornene and the mono-protected 3-amino-2-hydroxypyridine type ligand are crucial for this auxiliary-free meta-HArylation reaction.
Abstract: The meta-C-H arylation of free phenylacetic acid was realized using 2-carbomethoxynorbornene (NBE-CO2 Me) as a transient mediator. Both the modified norbornene and the mono-protected 3-amino-2-hydroxypyridine type ligand are crucial for this auxiliary-free meta-C-H arylation reaction. A series of phenylacetic acids, including mandelic acid and phenylglycine, react smoothly with various aryl iodides to provide the meta-arylated products in high yields.
