TL;DR: In this paper, an edge separation method for detecting one-dimensional objects in a given size range is described, and its capabilities contrasted with those of the conventional linear matched filter approach to object detection.

TL;DR: An optical position detector for monitoring the position of a radiating hot object such as a metallic heat emitting hot bar and/or rod product in a metal rolling mill is presented in this article.
Abstract: An optical position detector for monitoring the position of a radiating hot object such as a metallic heat emitting hot bar and/or rod product in a metal rolling mill, the monitoring detector including a scanning head having a rotating lens system that is focused on a heat sensitive photocell and which scans the position occupied by the hot object and develops a detection signal that is proportional to said occupied position. The sensing head also produces a reference signal. The reference signal and object detection signal are phase related so as to generate an analog signal which is then representative of the detected position of the object being monitored, and which may be utilized as a control signal in the rolling mill.
