Abstract: The software design process is discussed from an engineering point of view. Initially, a distinction is made between software design and program design. Software design is then described in terms of evolving a system architecture independently of implementation considerations. Computation structures are introduced as a means of modeling the dynamic behavior of a software architecture. Functional completeness, quality, machine independence, and performance completeness of a design are then used as criteria for engineering design decisions. Finally, the basic elements of a system to support the software design process are described.

TL;DR: A new theory on the designing process using a new concept "Boundary variable" is proposed and a structure of data bank for design which will be effective for CAD has been deduced from the theory.
Abstract: Future developments of Computer-Aided Design will be based on a methodology for design. This paper describes a new theory on the designing process. The challenging point is to find a practical process for defining variables and equations of a design object and solving it.Assuming that a design object can be constructed by combining some standard parts or units, a theory for partition and join using a new concept "Boundary variable" is proposed. The whole equations to decide the design of the object are obtained by the successive substitutions of the boundary variables to every partial formula. The boundary variables make a graph and it is advantageous for the cut and try techniques of designers. And then a structure of data bank for design which will be effective for CAD has been deduced from the theory. The evolution of this methodology will open a new field of CAD in future.
