TL;DR: A novel framework for detecting multiple objects from a single image and reasoning about occlusions between objects is proposed and a new probabilistic model is proposed to combine the bottom-up evidence from 3D aspect lets and the top-down occlusion reasoning to help object detection.
Abstract: We propose a novel framework for detecting multiple objects from a single image and reasoning about occlusions between objects. We address this problem from a 3D perspective in order to handle various occlusion patterns which can take place between objects. We introduce the concept of ``3D aspect lets'' based on a piecewise planar object representation. A 3D aspect let represents a portion of the object which provides evidence for partial observation of the object. A new probabilistic model (which we called spatial layout model) is proposed to combine the bottom-up evidence from 3D aspect lets and the top-down occlusion reasoning to help object detection. Experiments are conducted on two new challenging datasets with various degrees of occlusions to demonstrate that, by contextualizing objects in their 3D geometric configuration with respect to the observer, our method is able to obtain competitive detection results even in the presence of severe occlusions. Moreover, we demonstrate the ability of the model to estimate the locations of objects in 3D and predict the occlusion order between objects in images.

TL;DR: The design and implementation of secure network objects are described, which provide security for object-oriented network communication by taking advantage of objects and subtyping to present a simple but expressive programming interface for security.
Abstract: We describe the design and implementation of secure network objects, which provide security for object-oriented network communication. The design takes advantage of objects and subtyping to present a simple but expressive programming interface for security, supporting both access control lists and capabilities. The implementation of this design fits nicely within the structure of the existing network objects system; we discuss its internal components, its performance, and its use in some applications.

TL;DR: An interactive prototype design tool based on the methodology and model for describing the information objects in an office information system and how such objects flow among the components of such a system are designed and experimentally implemented.
Abstract: A model and methodology for describing the information objects in an office information system and how such objects flow among the components of such a system are presented. The model and methodology support the specification of information objects at multiple levels of abstraction. An interactive prototype design tool based on the methodology and model has been designed and experimentally implemented.

TL;DR: Key findings from empirical studies—early design is opportunistic; critical role of pictures in design conception; impact of various cognitive limitations— have very effectively determined requirements and design for a set of tools to support early design.
Abstract: Key findings from empirical studies—early design is opportunistic; critical role of pictures in design conception; impact of various cognitive limitations—have very effectively determined requirements and design for a set of tools to support early design. Key design features of the tools include respectively: (1) The (simultaneous) display of any software modules at arbitrary levels of abstraction and from any subsystems. The unrestricted, smooth navigation between these software modules. (2) Multiple design notations—pictorial and symbolic— cross-referenced, editable, and maintained consistent across all views. Integrated views of control flow, data flow, and functional decomposition. (3) Automatic layout at arbitrary levels of nesting. Visual display of execution paths in the solution. Automatic completeness and consistency check. Automatic visual indication and listing of modules with constraint violations.
