TL;DR: A set theory-based representation scheme is proposed to represent design objects in the design process, including design requirements, product descriptions, and product performances, which can represent the design objects that evolve in dynamic design processes.
Abstract: The Design Process begins with design requirements and ends with product descriptions. The design requirements include both structural and performance aspects. The product descriptions deal with the structural aspect of the design requirements while the product performances describe the performance aspect of design requirements. In this part of the paper, a set theory-based representation scheme is proposed to represent design objects in the design process, including design requirements, product descriptions, and product performances. This representation scheme can represent the design objects that evolve in dynamic design processes. The entire mathematical scheme is defined based on structural and behavioral properties. Within one uniform scheme, the design objects are represented at different levels of complexity and abstraction. Several examples are included to explain the scheme and its mathematical formulations. The proposed scheme can be used for science-based studies of product design.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method of providing associations between resources and actions in a network includes the steps of providing, in a database schema an action object class defining the structure and attributes of actions available in the network.
Abstract: A system and method of providing associations between resources and actions in a network includes the steps of providing, in a database schema an action object class defining the structure and attributes of actions available in the network. During operation, action objects are created and stored in a database. When a user enters the system, an internal list is created at that user, identifying the resources available to that user and the action objects capable of being performed on those resources. When a user selects an resource object, the action objects associated with that resource object are displayed, the user selects the action, and the action is performed at the resource. In one example the selection of an action objects cause an associated application to be launched. Each action object represents a string of executable code. The executable code may either be hardcoded in the network software, such that action objects are created at network startup, or alternatively may be linked to the network via an external code module.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a computer program, operating with a GUI and capable of linking or embedding an object from an application program into the GUI, which includes instructions for determining a size of the object, instructions for deciding whether the object is in an active mode and instructions for providing a first frame size of a container if the object was not in the active mode.
Abstract: A user interface with embedded or linked objects is enclosed. In one embodiment, the invention comprises a computer program, operating with a GUI and capable of linking or embedding an object from an application program into the GUI. The program includes instructions for determining a size of the object, instructions for determining whether the object is in an active mode, instructions for providing a first frame size of a container if the object is not in the active mode, and instructions for providing a second frame size if the object is in the active mode. The frame can simply represent the size of the container or an actual border around the container. The computer program also provides a first client window that is responsive to whether or not the object is active. Furthermore, the computer program adjusts the location of the object on the display when the object is in the active mode, provides space for controls of the objects server application, and provides appropriate pop-up menus for the object.

TL;DR: The purpose is to help designers in rapidly synthesizing alternative structural design solutions at the conceptual level to the point where the structural concept is supportive of the overall design and possible conflicts are explored and resolved.
