Abstract: [1] The cross-shock electrostatic potential at the front of collision-less shocks plays a key role in the distribution of energy at the shock front. Multipoint measurements such as those provided by the Cluster II mission provide an ideal framework for the study of the cross-shock potential because of their ability to distinguish between temporal and spacial variations at the shock front. We present a statistical study of the cross-shock potential calculated for around 50 crossings of the terrestrial bow shock. The statistical dependency of the normalized (with resect to upstream ion kinetic energy) cross-shock potential (ΦK) on the upstream Alfven Mach number is in good agreement with analytical results that predict decrease of Φk with increasing Mach number.

Abstract: Transition initiated by a pair of oblique waves was investigated experimentally in a Blasius boundary layer flow by using hot-wire measurements and flow visualisation. The oblique waves were generated by periodic blowing and suction through an array of pipes connecting to the flow through a transverse slit in the flat plate model. The structure of the flow field is described and the amplitude of individual frequency-spanwise wave number modes was determined from Fourier transforms of the disturbance velocity. In contrast to results from investigations of oblique transition at subcritical flow conditions, the transition process at the present conditions suggests the combined effect of non-modal growth of streaks and a second stage with exponential growth of oblique waves to initiate the final breakdown stage.

Abstract: Reduction in aerodynamic drag for a large angle blunt cone flying at hypersonic Mach number by heat addition into the shock layer is demonstrated in HST2 hypersonic shock tunnel. The heat addition is achieved by the exothermic reaction of chromium atoms ablated from the stagnation region of the chromium coated blunt cone with the atomic oxygen behind the shock wave. The measurements show about 47% reduction in the drag coefficient for a 60° apex angle blunt cone in a Mach 8 flow of 3.4 MJ/kg specific enthalpy. The reduction in drag is measured using the accelerometer based force balance system and the heat addition into the shock layer is identified by the surface mounted thin film heat flux gauges and the corresponding movement of the shock wave is visualized by schlieren pictures.
