TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use the variational inequality theory coupled with finite difference technique to obtain an approximate solution for a class of obstacle problems in elasticity, like those describing the equilibrium configuration of an elastic string stretched over an elastic obstacle.

TL;DR: The way that obstacles influence the movement time in reach-to-grasp movements is determined by the extent to which they limit the digits' paths.
Abstract: The movement time of a reach-to-grasp movement increases when obstacles are placed close to the target object We investigated whether this increase can best be explained by limits on the grip aperture or by limits on the paths of the individual digits In our experiment subjects were instructed to pick up an object with their index finger and thumb There was an obstacle at either side of the object The increase in movement time when either obstacle was placed closer to the object was best described by a model in which the movement amplitude and the distance between each obstacle and the target object are independent factors We conclude that the way that obstacles influence the movement time in reach-to-grasp movements is determined by the extent to which they limit the digits' paths

01 Nov 1988TL;DR: The study demonstrates the feasibility of fully automated gaits for walking over four types of simplified obstacles: grade, ditch, step, and isolated-wall.
Abstract: Fully automated gaits are studied that can be used to cross four types of simplified obstacles: grade, ditch, step, and isolated-wall. These gaits are simulated using computer graphics. The designer can arbitrarily select the dimensions of one obstacle; the computer program then generates a series of preprogrammed movements that enables a hexapod to cross over the obstacle in a fully automated mode. The study demonstrates the feasibility of fully automated gaits for walking over these four major types of obstacles. With further research, fully automated gaits for crossing over obstacles of general geometry may be expected. >

06 Jan 2016TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe methods for detecting an obstacle in a path of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and performing at least one obstacle avoidance maneuver based on the score.
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods for detecting an obstacle in a path of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) are described herein, including, but not limited to, receiving data from a single image/video capturing device of the UAV, computing a score based on the received data, and performing at least one obstacle avoidance maneuver based on the score.

TL;DR: In this article, a rear obstacle detection system using a single rear view camera is presented, where an efficient hierarchical detecting strategy is used to achieve high detection rate and low false positives.
Abstract: This paper presents a rear obstacle detection system by using a single rear view camera. The system can detect various static and moving obstacles behind the cars. An efficient hierarchical detecting strategy is used to achieve high detection rate and low false positives. The temporal Inverse perspective mapping difference image based coarse detection is used to estimate whether there are obstacles in the predetermined warning area at first stage. Then a novel integral image based segmentation algorithm is developed for fine obstacle segmentation. Finally, the blob analysis is utilized for obstacle representation and verification. Our system achieves 94.2% detection rate and 16% false positives rate on 125 challenging video sequences. The average processing speed of the system is 25fps on a standard laptop.
