Abstract: Variations in electric energy consumption that occur with identical units of HVAC equipment and in identical spaces in the same office building are analyzed and explained. The building can be considered representative of many recently built offices. Given a single building with similar occupancy throughout, it is common to assume that the energy use is also reasonably uniform through the building. The metering installed in this building provides a unique opportunity to examine the manner in which a large number of identical spaces use electricity for HVAC and lighting. The data collected shows that such assumptions are not valid, and that energy consumption does vary considerably.
