TL;DR: As-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles have a cubic spinel structure as characterized by HRTEM, SAED, and XRD and can be transformed into hydrophilic ones by adding bipolar surfactants, and aqueous nanoparticle dispersion is readily made.
Abstract: High-temperature solution phase reaction of iron(III) acetylacetonate, Fe(acac)3, with 1,2-hexadecanediol in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine leads to monodisperse magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. Similarly, reaction of Fe(acac)3 and Co(acac)2 or Mn(acac)2 with the same diol results in monodisperse CoFe2O4 or MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. Particle diameter can be tuned from 3 to 20 nm by varying reaction conditions or by seed-mediated growth. The as-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles have a cubic spinel structure as characterized by HRTEM, SAED, and XRD. Further, Fe3O4 can be oxidized to Fe2O3, as evidenced by XRD, NEXAFS spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry. The hydrophobic nanoparticles can be transformed into hydrophilic ones by adding bipolar surfactants, and aqueous nanoparticle dispersion is readily made. These iron oxide nanoparticles and their dispersions in various media have great potential in magnetic nanodevice and biomagnetic applications.

TL;DR: The reported procedure can be used as a general approach to various ferrite nanoparticles and nanoparticle superlattices.
Abstract: Monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles have been synthesized by high-temperature solution-phase reaction of Fe(acac)3 in phenyl ether with alcohol, oleic acid, and oleylamine. Seed-mediated growth is used to control Fe3O4 nanoparticle size, and variously sized nanoparticles from 3 to 20 nm have been produced. The as-synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles have inverse spinel structure, and their assemblies can be transformed into γ-Fe2O3 or α-Fe nanoparticle assemblies, depending on the annealing conditions. The reported procedure can be used as a general approach to various ferrite nanoparticles and nanoparticle superlattices.

TL;DR: Photoluminescent measurements indicate that the value of I610/I590 and the overall emission intensity of the NaEuF4 nanocrystals are highly correlative with the symmetries of the Eu3+ ions in both the lattice and the surface.
Abstract: We report a general synthesis of high-quality cubic (α-phase) and hexagonal (β-phase) NaREF4 (RE: Pr to Lu, Y) nanocrystals (nanopolyhedra, nanorods, nanoplates, and nanospheres) and NaYF4:Yb,Er/Tm nanocrystals (nanopolyhedra and nanoplates) via the co-thermolysis of Na(CF3COO) and RE(CF3COO)3 in oleic acid/oleylamine/1-octadecene. By tuning the ratio of Na/RE, solvent composition, reaction temperature and time, we can manipulate phase, shape, and size of the nanocrystals. On the basis of its α → β phase transition behavior, along the rare-earth series, NaREF4 can be divided into three groups (I: Pr and Nd; II: Sm to Tb; III: Dy to Lu, Y). The whole controlled-synthesis mechanism can be explained from the point of view of free energy. Photoluminescent measurements indicate that the value of I610/I590 and the overall emission intensity of the NaEuF4 nanocrystals are highly correlative with the symmetries of the Eu3+ ions in both the lattice and the surface.

TL;DR: In this paper, the use of oleylamine (OAm) as a versatile reagent for the synthesis of various nanoparticle systems is discussed, including the ability of OAm to act as a surfactant, solvent, and reducing agent, as a function of other synthesis parameters.
Abstract: Wet chemistry in organic solvents has proven highly efficient for the preparation of several types of metallic, metal-oxide, and semiconductor nanostructures. This Short Review focuses on the use of oleylamine (OAm) as a versatile reagent for the synthesis of various nanoparticle systems. We describe the ability of OAm to act as a surfactant, solvent, and reducing agent, as a function of other synthesis parameters. We also discuss the specific role of OAm either alone or in combination with other reactants, to form nanostructures using a variety of organic or inorganic compounds as precursors. In certain cases OAm can form complex compounds with the metal ions of the corresponding precursor, leading to metastable compounds that can act as secondary precursors and thus be decomposed in a controlled way to yield nanoparticles. We also point out that OAm-stabilized particles can often be dispersed in different organic solvents yielding solutions with enhanced colloidal stability over long times and the poten...

TL;DR: In this article, the up-conversion fluorescence intensity of hexagonal-phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals was shown to be much higher than that of other cubic-phase nanocrystal, including the ones in this work.
Abstract: IR-to-visible up-conversion fluorescent nanocrystals of hexagonal-phase NaYF4:20 %Yb,2 %Er and NaYF4:20 %Yb,2 %Tm have been synthesized by decomposition of multiprecursors of CF3COONa, (CF3COO)3Y, (CF3COO)3Yb, and (CF3COO)3Er/(CF3COO)3Tm in oleylamine at 330 °C. The average particle size is 10.5 ± 0.7 nm (from random measurements of 200 particles from five transmission electron microscopy images) and 11.1 ± 1.3 nm (from dynamic-light-scattering measurements). The up-conversion fluorescence intensity of the hexagonal nanocrystals in this work is much higher than that of other cubic-phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals, including the ones in this work (by a factor of 7.5). Mechanisms for nucleation and growth of the hexagonal-phase nanoparticles are proposed. These nanocrystals are easily dispersed in organic solvents, producing a transparent colloidal solution. The hydrophobic surfaces of the particles are made hydrophilic using a bipolar surfactant. These nanoparticles and their dispersions in various media have potential applications in optical nanodevices and bioprobes.
