Abstract: Systematic ontology has often been investigated with respect to its contents but is largely neglected as to its form The form insures that we shall be confronted with the logical structure of a system expressed in a technical language Ontological systems are compelled to face difficulties which are peculiar to themselves Examples of such difficulties are those arising from the all-presumptive claim The best we can do thus far is to modify the presumption of an ontological system until it extends over all and only those rival systems which currently are in existence We can enlist in its defense against them whatever evidence can be marshalled in favor of its consistency, completeness and interpretation Before we can have an ontology, we must describe the kind of world in which knowledge of this sort can occur There must be some accounting for activity and conflict, for calm recurrences, for the frayed, tag-ends of strivings, and, above all, for the binding forces which hold together these disparate elements Such an accounting would feature the whole involvement of being known; but then the question can be raised, what species of being is that ?
