Abstract: We extend the notion of ontology matching to community-driven ontology matching. Primarily, the idea is to enable Web communities to establish and reuse ontology mappings in order to achieve, within those communities, an adequate and timely domain representation, facilitated knowledge exchange, etc. Secondarily, the matching community is provided with the new practice, which is a public alignment reuse. Specifically, we present an approach to construction of a community-driven ontology matching system and discuss its implementation. An analysis of the system usage indicates that our strategy is promising. In particular, the results obtained justify feasibility and usefulness of the community-driven ontology mappings' acquisition and sharing.

Abstract: A geo-ontology has a key role to play in the development of a spatially-aware search engine, with regard to providing support for query disambiguation, query term expansion, relevance ranking and web resource annotation. This paper reviews these functions, discusses the user requirements which influence the design of the ontology, with regard to different types of query and fundamental spatial concepts, before presenting a base model for a geographical ontology which will provide a foundation for subsequent implementation as well as experimentation with alternative ontology models. The report also reviews various ontology languages available for expressing ontologies and give examples for encoding the geo-ontology in them.

Abstract: The large-scale effort in developing, maintaining and making biomedical ontologies available motivates the application of similarity measures to compare ontology concepts or, by extension, the entities described therein. A common approach, known as semantic similarity, compares ontology concepts through the information content they share in the ontology. However, different disjunctive ancestors in the ontology are frequently neglected, or not properly explored, by semantic similarity measures. This paper proposes a novel method, dubbed DiShIn, that effectively exploits the multiple inheritance relationships present in many biomedical ontologies. DiShIn calculates the shared information content of two ontology concepts, based on the information content of the disjunctive common ancestors of the concepts being compared. DiShIn identifies these disjunctive ancestors through the number of distinct paths from the concepts to their common ancestors. DiShIn was applied to Gene Ontology and its performance was evaluated against state-of-the-art measures using CESSM, a publicly available evaluation platform of protein similarity measures. By modifying the way traditional semantic similarity measures calculate the shared information content, DiShIn was able to obtain a statistically significant higher correlation between semantic and sequence similarity. Moreover, the incorporation of DiShIn in existing applications that exploit multiple inheritance would reduce their execution time.

Abstract: Ontology Based Data Access OBDA is a prominent approach to query databases which uses an ontology to expose data in a conceptually clear manner by abstracting away from the technical schema-level details of the underlying data. The ontology is 'connected' to the data via mappings that allow to automatically translate queries posed over the ontology into data-level queries that can be executed by the underlying database management system. Despite a lot of attention from the research community, there are still few instances of real world industrial use of OBDA systems. In this work we present data access challenges in the data-intensive petroleum company Statoil and our experience in addressing these challenges with OBDA technology. In particular, we have developed a deployment module to create ontologies and mappings from relational databases in a semi-automatic fashion, and a query processing module to perform and optimise the process of translating ontological queries into data queries and their execution. Our modules have been successfully deployed and evaluated for an OBDA solution in Statoil.
