Abstract: In the last 20 years, the study of operator algebras has developed from a branch of functional analysis to a central field of mathematics with applications and connections with different areas in both pure mathematics (foliations, index theory, K-theory, cyclic homology, affine Kac--Moody algebras, quantum groups, low dimensional topology) and mathematical physics (integrable theories, statistical mechanics, conformal field theories and the string theories of elementary particles). The theory of operator algebras was initiated by von Neumann and Murray as a tool for studying group representations and as a framework for quantum mechanics, and has since kept in touch with its roots in physics as a framework for quantum statistical mechanics and the formalism of algebraic quantum field theory. However, in 1981, the study of operator algebras took a new turn with the introduction by Vaughan Jones of subfactor theory and remarkable connections were found with knot theory, 3-manifolds, quantum groups and integrable systems in statistical mechanics and conformal field theory. The purpose of this book, one of the first in the area, is to look at these combinatorial-algebraic developments from the perspective of operator algebras; to bring the reader to the frontline of research with the minimum of prerequisites from classical theory.

Abstract: The first edition of this book appeared in 1981 as a direct continuation of Lectures of von Neumann Algebras (by S.V. Stratila and L. Zsido) and, until 2003, was the only comprehensive monograph on the subject. Addressing the students of mathematics and physics and researchers interested in operator algebras, noncommutative geometry and free probability, this revised edition covers the fundamentals and latest developments in the field of operator algebras. It discusses the group-measure space construction, Krieger factors, infinite tensor products of factors of type I (ITPFI factors) and construction of the type III_1 hyperfinite factor. It also studies the techniques necessary for continuous and discrete decomposition, duality theory for noncommutative groups, discrete decomposition of Connes, and Ocneanu's result on the actions of amenable groups. It contains a detailed consideration of groups of automorphisms and their spectral theory, and the theory of crossed products.

Abstract: The existence of inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations which describe a nonrelativistic infinite free Bose gas of uniform density is investigated, with a view to possible applications to statistical mechanics. The functional E(f, g)=(Ψ, eiφ(f) eiπ(g)Ψ) is used to describe the inequivalent representations. This functional is calculated for the free Bose gas in a box of volume V, and the limit is then taken as V → ∞. In this way we construct cyclic representations describing an infinite system of particles with a density distribution ρ(k) in momentum space. For a given ρ(k) the operator algebra generated by the φ(f), π(g) is reducible. For the ground‐state representation (all particles in the zero‐momentum state), the representation is a direct integral of irreducible representations (analogous to BCS theory). Abstract: We study representations of the Schr\"odinger algebra in terms of operators in nonrelativistic conformal field theories. We prove a correspondence between primary operators and eigenstates of few-body systems in a harmonic potential. Using the correspondence we compute analytically the energy of fermions at unitarity in a harmonic potential near two and four spatial dimensions. We also compute the energy of anyons in a harmonic potential near the bosonic and fermionic limits.
