TL;DR: In this paper, the phase operator for an oscillator is shown not to exist and a pair of non-commuting sin and cos operators are used to define uncertainty relations for phase and number.
Abstract: The phase operator for an oscillator is shown not to exist. It is replaced by a pair of non-commuting sin and cos operators which can be used to define uncertainty relations for phase and number. The relation between phase and angle operators is carefully discussed. The possibility of using a phase variable as a quantum clock is demonstrated and the states for which the clock is most accurate are constructed.

TL;DR: In this article, Luttinger's exactly soluble model of a one-dimensional many-fermion system is discussed and the exact spectrum, free energy, and dielectric constant are obtained.
Abstract: Luttinger’s exactly soluble model of a one-dimensional many-fermion system is discussed. We show that he did not solve his model properly because of the paradoxical fact that the density operator commutators [p(p), p(−p′)], which always vanish for any finite number of particles, no longer vanish in the field-theoretic limit of a filled Dirac sea. In fact the operators p(p) define a boson field which is ipso facto associated with the Fermi-Dirac field. We then use this observation to solve the model, and obtain the exact (and now nontrivial) spectrum, free energy, and dielectric constant. This we also extend to more realistic interactions in an Appendix. We calculate the Fermi surface parameter , and find: (i.e., there exists a sharp Fermi surface) only in the case of a sufficiently weak interaction.

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of variable and distributed order fractional operators is introduced and behavior of the operators is studied, including time invariance of the operator, operator initialization, physical realization, linearity, operational transforms, and memory characteristics of the defining kernels.
Abstract: Many physical processes appear to exhibit fractional order behavior that may vary with time or space. The continuum of order in the fractional calculus allows the order of the fractional operator to be considered as a variable. This paper develops the concept of variable and distributed order fractional operators. Definitions based on the Riemann-Liouville definitions are introduced and behavior of the operators is studied. Several time domain definitions that assign different arguments to the order q in the Riemann-Liouville definition are introduced. For each of these definitions various characteristics are determined. These include: time invariance of the operator, operator initialization, physical realization, linearity, operational transforms. and memory characteristics of the defining kernels. A measure (m2) for memory retentiveness of the order history is introduced. A generalized linear argument for the order q allows the concept of "tailored" variable order fractional operators whose a, memory may be chosen for a particular application. Memory retentiveness (m2) and order dynamic behavior are investigated and applications are shown. The concept of distributed order operators where the order of the time based operator depends on an additional independent (spatial) variable is also forwarded. Several definitions and their Laplace transforms are developed, analysis methods with these operators are demonstrated, and examples shown. Finally operators of multivariable and distributed order are defined in their various applications are outlined.

TL;DR: A novel practical method is developed for obtaining the OWA weights, which can relieve the influence of unfair arguments on the decision results by weighting these arguments with small values.
Abstract: The ordered weighted aggregation (OWA) operator has received more and more attention since its appearance. One key point in the OWA operator is to determine its associated weights. In this article, I first briefly review existing main methods for determining the weights associated with the OWA operator, and then, motivated by the idea of normal distribution, I develop a novel practical method for obtaining the OWA weights, which is distinctly different from the existing ones. The method can relieve the influence of unfair arguments on the decision results by weighting these arguments with small values. Some of its desirable properties have also been investigated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Int Syst 20: 843–865, 2005.
