Abstract: A method for transferring information within a cellular communications network ( 20 ), consisting of transmitting an optical carrier from a first network-element ( 26 A) of the network, modulating the optical carrier ( 57, 59 ) with the information, and detecting the modulated optical carrier in an avalanche photo-diode (APD) ( 150 ) in a second network-element ( 24 A) of the network so as to recover the information The method includes altering a gain of the APD responsive to a level of the optical carrier so as to prevent saturation of the APD Other methods and apparatus are also provided for transferring the information via the optical carrier, and also for using the information transferred

Abstract: A spread spectrum waveform generator has a photonic oscillator and an optical heterodyne synthesizer. The photonic oscillator is a multi-tone optical comb generator for generating a series of RF comb lines on an optical carrier. The optical heterodyne synthesizer includes first and second phase-locked lasers, where the first laser feeds the multi-tone optical comb generator and the second laser is a single tone laser whose output light provides a frequency translation reference. At least one photodetector is provided for heterodyning the frequency translation reference with the optical output of the photonic oscillator to generate a spread spectrum waveform. A receiver pre-processor may be provided to operate on the spread spectrum waveform.

Abstract: We developed an all-optical link system for making remote comparisons of two distant ultra-stable optical clocks. An optical carrier transfer system based on a fiber interferometer was employed to compensate the phase noise accumulated during the propagation through a fiber link. Transfer stabilities of 2 × 10−15 at 1 second and 4 × 10−18 at 1000 seconds were achieved in a 90-km link. An active polarization control system was additionally introduced to maintain the transmitted light in an adequate polarization, and consequently, a stable and reliable comparison was accomplished. The instabilities of the all-optical link system, including those of the erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) which are free from phase-noise compensation, were below 2 × 10−15 at 1 second and 7 × 10−17 at 1000 seconds. The system was available for the direct comparison of two distant 87Sr lattice clocks via an urban fiber link of 60 km. This technique will be essential for the measuring the reproducibility of optical frequency standards.

Abstract: In a ring network communication structure for communication on an optical carrier (3A, 3B), a plurality of nodes (2A, ..., 2E) are interconnected by means of connections comprising at least a first (3A) and a second (3B) optical carrier, such as an optical fibre. Transmission occurs on the ring according to a WDM scheme, by utilising a first wavelength (λ₁) for communication in one direction on the first carrier (3A) of said pair, while communication in the opposite direction occurs by employing a second wavelength (λ₂) on the other optical carrier (3B). In the presence of a failure on one of the connections, the nodes adjacent (2B, 2C) to the failed connection reconfigure themselves to ensure the continuation of communication on the alternative path provided by the ring, by utilising the first wavelength (λ₁) on the second carrier (3B) and the second wavelength (λ₂) on the first carrier (3A). Preferential application to SDH optical fibre ring networks.

Abstract: GMPLS-based labeled optical burst switching (LOBS) networks are being considered as the next-generation optical Internet. GMPLS includes wavelength switching next to label and fiber (space) switching. We present a new concept of optically labeling bursts of packets suitable for LOBS networks supported by GMPLS. It is based on angle modulation, which enables control information to modulate the phase or frequency of the optical carrier, while payload data are transmitted via intensity modulation (IM). In particular, the optical label is orthogonally modulated, with respect to the payload, using either frequency shift keying or differential phase shift keying. We present a performance analysis of the modulation schemes by means of simulations where the influence of the payload IM extinction ratio and laser linewidth are investigated. In addition, the transmission performance of an IM/FSK combined modulated signal is experimentally validated at 10 Gb/s, demonstrating at the same time an FSK label swapping operation. Finally, a suitable optical label-controlled switch design is proposed that takes advantage of these novel labeling techniques, and efficiently combines widely tunable, fast switching lasers and SOA-MZI wavelength converters with an arrayed waveguide grating router.
