TL;DR: In this paper, a short optical pulse generator is provided with a semiconductor laser which oscillates continuously at a single wavelength, a SED electro-absorption type optical modulator which performs the intensity modulation of the output light from the laser, and a sinusoidal voltage generator and a DC voltage generator for driving the electroabsorption types optical modulators.
Abstract: The short optical pulse generator is provided with a semiconductor laser which oscillates continuously at a single wavelength, a semiconductor electro-absorption type optical modulator which performs the intensity modulation of the output light from the laser, and a sinusoidal voltage generator and a DC voltage generator for driving the electro-absorption type optical modulator A DC voltage is applied to the electro-absorption type optical modulator so that the output light from the laser is sufficiently extinguished By applying a sinusoidal voltage to the optical modulator, short optical pulses are generated

TL;DR: The PROM (Pockels Readout Optical Modulator) described in this paper is a device for storing and processing optical images and information in recyclable, real time operating systems demonstrating high writein sensitivity, high resolution, high contrast, high optical and diffraction efficiency, fast recycling times, long storage times, and freedom from fatigue.
Abstract: The PROM (Pockels Readout Optical Modulator) described in this paper is a device for storing and processing optical images and information in recyclable, real time operating systems. The device consists of a single active layer of a cubic photosensitive, electrooptic material. ZnS, ZnSe, and Bi12SiO20 devices have been fabricated and characterized demonstrating high writein sensitivity, high resolution, high contrast, high optical and diffraction efficiency, fast recycling times, long storage times, and freedom from fatigue. Operating modes and measured performance parameters are discussed.

TL;DR: High-speed operation of pin-diode-based silicon Mach-Zehnder modulators that have side-wall gratings on both sides of the waveguide core are presented and the use of pre-emphasis signals generated with a finite impulse response digital filter was examined.
Abstract: We present high-speed operation of pin-diode-based silicon Mach-Zehnder modulators that have side-wall gratings on both sides of the waveguide core. The use of pre-emphasis signals generated with a finite impulse response digital filter was examined in the frequency domain to show how the filter works for different filter parameter sets. In large signal modulation experiments, VπL as low as 0.29 V·cm was obtained at 12.5 Gb/s using a fabricated modulator and the pre-emphasis technique. Operation of up to 25-Gb/s is possible using basically the same driving configurations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to provide a nonlinear threshold response and a computer-generated hologram to provide interconnections between logic gates.
Abstract: An optical system that performs sequential binary logic operations is described. The system consists of a spatial light modulator (SLM) used to provide a nonlinear threshold response and a computer-generated hologram to provide interconnections between logic gates. A 2-D array of logic gates with binary inputs and outputs is formed on the active surface of the SLM. These gates are interconnected by a 2-D array of subholograms, one for each gate. Arbitrary logic circuits consisting of NOR gates and inverters can be implemented, and the system can be reconfigured by changing a single holographic element. The system is demonstrated using a twisted-nematic liquid crystal light valve as the SLM. A test circuit is implemented that includes a synchronous master–slave flip-flop and an oscillator consisting of five inverters in a feedback loop. Experimental results of this test circuit are presented.
