04 Feb 2002TL;DR: In this article, a system for producing modulated light is described, which includes a spatial light modulator including a light modulating medium switchable between different states so as to act on light in ways which form overall patterns of modulated lights.
Abstract: A system for producing modulated light is disclosed. The system comprises a spatial light modulator including a light modulating medium switchable between different states so as to act on light in ways which form overall patterns of modulated light. The system also includes an arrangement for switching the modulating medium between the different states in a controlled way and an illumination arrangement for producing a source of light. The system further includes an optics arrangement for directing light from the source of light into the spatial light modulator and for directing light from the spatial light modulator through a predetermined source imaging area. The optics arrangement cooperates with the illumination arrangement and the spatial light modulator so as to produce a real image of the source of light within the source imaging area such that an individual is able to view a virtual image of the overall patterns of modulated light from the source imaging area. A variety of novel optics arrangements are disclosed including specific combinations of different light sources, diffusing plates, polarizers, beam splitters, analyzers, lenses, mirrors, and holographic optical elements which allow the overall optical arrangement to be miniaturized to the same degree and in coordination with the spatial light modulator. The different light sources include using a plurality of light sources, such as LEDs, to form an array of light sources, each of the light sources providing light to a corresponding portion of the spatial light modulator.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a structured light intensity pattern can be produced at the output of a multi-mode optical fiber by shaping the wavefront of the input beam with a spatial light modulator.
Abstract: We demonstrate that a structured light intensity pattern can be produced at the output of a multi-mode optical fiber by shaping the wavefront of the input beam with a spatial light modulator. We also find the useful property that, as in the case for free space propagation, output intensities can be easily superimposed by taking the argument of the complex superposition of corresponding phase-only holograms. An analytical expression is derived relating output intensities ratios to hologram weights in the superposition.

TL;DR: A platform for the realization of tightly-confined lithium niobate photonic devices and circuits on silicon substrates is reported based on wafer bonding and selective oxidation of refractory metals.
Abstract: A platform for the realization of tightly-confined lithium niobate photonic devices and circuits on silicon substrates is reported based on wafer bonding and selective oxidation of refractory metals. The heterogeneous photonic platform is employed to demonstrate high-performance lithium niobate microring optical resonators and Mach-Zehnder optical modulators. A quality factor of ~7.2 × 104 is measured in the microresonators, and a half-wave voltage-length product of 4 V.cm and an extinction ratio of 20 dB is measured in the modulators.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the number of parts is made large and an entire projection type display device is not made small in size, light in weight and inexpensive because surface light sources emitting respective color light beams R, G and B and spatial optical modulators corresponding to the respective light sources are required in order to perform color display on the projection type display device SOLUTION: A light emitting diode emitting ultraviolet light is used for the light source, and a visible light reflection film having characteristic that the ultraviolet light is transmitted and visible light is reflected is formed on the surface of a color wheel on the light source side, and phosphor layers respectively emitting the visible light corresponding to the color light beams R, G and B by the radiation of the ultraviolet light are formed on the back surface side of the color wheel COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI

TL;DR: An experimental demonstration of fast all-optical switching on a silicon photonic integrated device by employing a strong light-confinement structure to enhance sensitivity to small changes in the refractive index.
Abstract: We present an experimental demonstration of fast all-optical switching on a silicon photonic integrated device by employing a strong light-confinement structure to enhance sensitivity to small changes in the refractive index. By use of a control light pulse with energy as low as 40 pJ, the optical transmission of the structure is modulated by more than 97% with a time response of 450 ps.
