TL;DR: In this article, a light splitter is used to split an incident beam into two beams; a first spatial light modulator can be arranged in an optical path of a first beam; a second spatial modulator which can be placed in an optic path of the second beam; and a light combiner which combines a beam having passed via the first spatio-temporal modulator, with a beam passing via the second spatial light modulation, each of which has a plurality of optical elements arranged two-dimensional and controlled individually.
Abstract: An illumination optical apparatus has an optical unit. The optical unit has a light splitter to split an incident beam into two beams; a first spatial light modulator which can be arranged in an optical path of a first beam; a second spatial light modulator which can be arranged in an optical path of a second beam; and a light combiner which combines a beam having passed via the first spatial light modulator, with a beam having passed via the second spatial light modulator; each of the first spatial light modulator and the second spatial light modulator has a plurality of optical elements arranged two-dimensionally and controlled individually.

TL;DR: In this article, a projected light quantity controller is adapted to control the operation of projected light of the projected light and that of modulating the write signal of a write signal processor on the basis of the brightness level of the input image signal.
Abstract: A projection type image-display apparatus includes a write signal processor for modulating the write signal transmitted to an optical modulator, a projected light quantity controlling for controlling the quantity of light transmitted or reflected by the optical modulator, and a control signal generator for controlling the write signal processor and the projected light quantity controller. The control signal generator is adapted to control the operation of controlling the quantity of projected light of the projected light quantity controller and that of modulating the write signal of the write signal processor on the basis of the brightness level of the input image signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, a power variation optical relay system is used to convert an incident beam of unpolarized light to a light beam having linearly polarized components with one type of polarization direction and emits the converted light beam.
Abstract: An illumination system includes a light source that emits unpolarized light, a power variation optical relay system that changes the size of a light beam emitted by the light source, a superposition optical system that effects illumination of an illumination region by an incident light beam, a polarization conversion system that is provided at a selected position along a light path from the incident surface of the power variation optical relay system to the exit surface of the superposition optical system to convert an incident beam of unpolarized light to a light beam having linearly polarized components with one type of polarization direction and emits the converted light beam. The size of a light beam entering the polarization conversion system in a prescribed direction is reduced by the power variation optical relay system. The illumination system includes an integrator optical system and polarization conversion system that uses a light source lamp with a higher output than a conventional lamp, and allows the light output to be increased without decreasing the utilization efficiency of the illumination system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a control unit for controlling an optically modulating apparatus in an optical transmitter, including plural optical modulators producing an optical output signal consisting of a series of optical pulses for transmitting data under OTDM or WDM, is described.
Abstract: A control unit for controlling an optically modulating apparatus in an optical transmitter, including plural optical modulators producing an optical output signal consisting of a series of optical pulses for transmitting data under OTDM or WDM, so that pre-chirping magnitudes of the modulators are changed together with drift compensation, for preventing waveform deterioration due to an optical transmission line from occurring. The pre-chirping magnitudes are changed by shifting operating points of modulators only concerning pre-chirping, without affecting other transmitting characteristics of the optical output signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sinusoidally driven InGaAsP electroabsorption modulator was applied to an inline optical gate for a 2R (reshape and retiming) repeater in optical amplifier systems, an n:1 optical demultiplexer in time division multiplexing systems, and an optical switch.
Abstract: The authors propose new applications of a sinusoidally driven InGaAsP electroabsorption modulator to an inline optical gate for a 2R (reshape and retiming) repeater in optical amplifier systems, an n:1 optical demultiplexer in time division multiplexing systems, and an optical switch. The small polarization dependence of the modulator is essential for inline use. By utilizing the monotonic increase of the extinction ratio with increasing applied voltage, the electroabsorption modulator driven by a large-signal sinusoidal voltage can produce a time domain square-shaped gate function with variable gate width. Furthermore, amplified spontaneous emission noise of optical amplifier systems can be reduced in both time and wavelength domains at the off-state of the modulator, due to noninterferometric wide wavelength operation of the modulator. Experimental results for a 2R repeater, an n:1 (n=4, 8) optical demultiplexer, and optical gates for switching are also demonstrated at over 10-Gb/s repetition rate. >
