Abstract: We review the use of bidirectional pumping and collinear propagation in type-II phase-matched periodically poled KTiOPO4 to achieve efficient generation of polarization-entangled photons via spontaneous parametric downconversion. The advantages of this approach are fully exploited in our optimized polarization Sagnac interferometric source. Its measured flux of 4700 polarization-entangled photon pairs/s per milliwatt of pump power in a 1-nm bandwidth exhibited 99% quantum-interference visibility. We also present a plane-wave Gaussian state theory for continuous-wave spontaneous parametric downconversion. This formulation affords the complete description of multiple-pair emissions that is needed for quantum communication analyses while reducing to the usual biphoton-state description at low generation rates.

Abstract: We report a radially polarized coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (RP-CARS) microscopy for facilitating longitudinally oriented molecules detection. We observe that under tight focusing of radially polarized pump and Stokes light fields with a high-NA objective, RP-CARS radiation from molecules oriented along the longitudinal direction is approximately threefold stronger than that using linearly polarized CARS (LP-CARS) technique. The lateral resolution of RP-CARS imaging can be improved by about 10% compared to the LP-CARS imaging. We demonstrate this RP-CARS technique by imaging the sectioned cottonwood leaf vascular bundles.

Abstract: Crosstalk in optical waveguide switches/modulators caused by having two polarizations simultaneously present is studied in this work. This situation is expected to arise when fiber optical transmission lines are coupled to integrated optical circuits. Modulator/switch performance is found to be strongly affected by having two propagating polarizations. Conditions on device design are found that minimize the polarization sensitivity of switches/modulators, making them suitable for use with fiber optic transmission lines.
