TL;DR: In this paper, a very thin tensile-strained bulk structure was used for the active layer and active width-tapered spot-size converters (SSCs) were integrated on both input and output sides.
Abstract: A high-output-power 1550 nm polarization-insensitive semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) was developed for use as a compact in-line optical amplifier. A very thin tensile-strained bulk structure was used for the active layer and active width-tapered spot-size converters (SSCs) were integrated on both input and output sides. The SOA module exhibited a high saturation output power of +17 dBm together with a low noise figure of 7 dB, large gain of 19 dB, and low polarization sensitivity of 0.2 dB for optical signals of 1550 nm wavelength. For the amplification of optical signals modulated at 10 Gb/s in the nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) format, a good eye pattern without waveform distortion due to the pattern effect was obtained at an average output power of up to +12 dBm. Additionally, good amplification characteristics were demonstrated for the signal wavelength range corresponding to the C-band.

TL;DR: The principle of correlation-based distributed generation and readout of dynamic grating spectrum generated in stimulated Brillouin scattering in a polarization-maintaining optical fiber is studied and synchronous sinusoidal frequency modulations are demonstrated.
Abstract: We study the principle of correlation-based distributed generation and readout of dynamic grating spectrum generated in stimulated Brillouin scattering in a polarization-maintaining optical fiber. The experimental validation is demonstrated by applying synchronous sinusoidal frequency modulations to two orthogonally polarized laser sources that serve as the Brillouin pump-probe light and readout light of the dynamic grating, respectively. Temperature-induced opposite changes in the Brillouin frequency shift and in the birefringence-determined optical frequency deviation are clearly observed with 1.2 m spatial resolution and a 110 m measurement range.

TL;DR: In this article, an explanation of the excellent Q-switched lasing of Nd:YVO 4 at pump levels many times threshold with no intracavity polarizer is presented.
Abstract: An explanation of the excellent Q -switched lasing of Nd:YVO 4 at pump levels many times threshold with no intracavity polarizer is presented. A small wedge between the laser rod's end faces, coupled with the material's high birefringence, enables the rod to act as its own intraeavity polarizer. This results in a simplification of the Q -switched optical resonator and can be applied to other birefringent laser materials.

TL;DR: Spectrophotopolarimetric capability can be added to a laboratory interferometer-spectrometer by use of a specially designed module described in this article, where high-resolution spectra can be obtained of the Stokes parameters of the reference beam and the beams diffusely reflected or transmitted by a sample medium of interest.
Abstract: Spectrophotopolarimetric capability can be added to a laboratory interferometer-spectrometer by use of a specially designed module described herein. With the instrument so augmented, high-resolution spectra can be obtained of the Stokes parameters of the reference beam and the beams diffusely reflected or transmitted by a sample medium of interest. For any such beam, the exponential Fourier transforms of the two interferograms obtained with a polarizer-analyzer oriented along the 0 deg and the 90 deg directions provide the spectra of I and Q, separately. Within experimental (and numerical) noise, this I spectrum should be the same as the one obtained with the polarizer removed. The remaining Stokes parameters U and V are obtained with a third interferogram recorded with the polarizer along the 45 deg direction. The complete theory of this instrument is described including the detailed analysis of the polarization-interferograms it provides.
