Abstract: Mobius strips are three-dimensional geometrical structures, fascinating for their peculiar property of being surfaces with only one “side” - or, more technically, being “non-orientable” surfaces. Despite being easily realized artificially, the spontaneous emergence of these structures in nature is exceedingly rare. Here, we generate Mobius strips of optical polarization by tightly focusing the light beam emerging from a q -plate, a liquid crystal device that modifies the polarization of light in a space-variant manner. Using a recently developed method for the three-dimensional nano-tomography of optical vector fields, we fully reconstruct the light polarization structure in the focal region, confirming the appearance of Mobius polarization structures. The preparation of such structured light modes may be important for complex light beam engineering and optical micro- and nano-fabrication.

Abstract: Driven primarily by cloud service and data-center applications, short-reach optical communication has become a key market segment and growing research area in recent years. Short-reach systems are characterized by direct detection-based receiver configurations and other low-cost and small form factor components that induce transmission impairments unforeseen in their coherent counterparts. Innovative signaling and digital signal processing (DSP) play a pivotal role in enabling these components to realize their ultimate potentials and meet data rate requirements in cost-effective manners. This paper presents an overview of recent DSP developments for short-reach communications systems and discusses future trends.

Abstract: In this paper, we outline the design of signal processing (DSP) algorithms with blind estimation for 100-G coherent optical polarization-diversity receivers in single-carrier systems. As main degrading optical propagation effects, we considered chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), polarization-dependent loss (PDL), and cross-phase modulation (XPM). In the context of this work, we developed algorithms to increase the robustness of the single DSP receiver modules against the aforesaid propagation effects. In particular, we first present a new and fast algorithm to perform blind adaptive CD compensation through frequency-domain equalization. This low complexity equalizer component inherits a highly precise estimation of residual dispersion independent from previous or subsequent blocks. Next, we introduce an original dispersion-tolerant timing recovery and illustrate the derivation of blind polarization demultiplexing, capable to operate also in condition of high PDL. At last, we propose an XPM-mitigating carrier phase recovery as an extension of the standard Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm.

Abstract: This paper gives a review of acoustic and ultrasonic optical fiber sensors (OFSs). The review covers optical fiber sensing methods for detecting dynamic strain signals, including general sound and acoustic signals, high-frequency signals, i.e., ultrasonic/ultrasound, and other signals such as acoustic emissions, and impact induced dynamic strain. Several optical fiber sensing methods are included, in an attempted to summarize the majority of optical fiber sensing methods used to date. The OFS include single fiber sensors and optical fiber devices, fiber-optic interferometers, and fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The single fiber and fiber device sensors include optical fiber couplers, microbend sensors, refraction-based sensors, and other extrinsic intensity sensors. The optical fiber interferometers include Michelson, Mach-Zehnder, Fabry-Perot, Sagnac interferometers, as well as polarization and model interference. The specific applications addressed in this review include optical fiber hydrophones, biomedical sensors, and sensors for nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. Future directions are outlined and proposed for acousto-ultrasonic OFS.
