TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have identified 12 Seyfert 1 galaxies that exhibit optical polarization spectra similar to those of SEYFERT 2 galaxies in which polarized broad lines are detected.
Abstract: We have identified 12 Seyfert 1 galaxies that exhibit optical polarization spectra similar to those of Seyfert 2 galaxies in which polarized broad lines are detected. We present new spectropolarimetric observations of three of them: Was 45, Mrk 231 and NGC 3227. These objects appear to be polarized as a result of far-field scattering in the polar illumination cones of the circumnuclear torus. We estimate that they represent between 10 and 30 per cent of the Seyfert 1 population; they are found amongst all the main spectroscopic subtypes, including narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. We have shown elsewhere that Seyfert 1 nuclei more commonly have polarization characteristics that can be attributed to scattering by a compact 'equatorial' scattering region located inside the torus. We propose that both equatorial and polar scattering regions are present in all Seyfert galaxies and argue that the observed range of polarization properties can be broadly understood as an orientation effect. In this scheme, polar-scattered Seyfert 1 galaxies represent the transition between unobscured (the majority of type 1) and obscured (type 2) Seyferts. They are viewed through the upper layers of the torus and are thus subject to moderate extinction (A V 1-4 mag) sufficient to suppress polarized light from the equatorial scattering region, but not the broad wings of the Balmer lines. The orientation of the polarization position angle relative to the radio source is broadly consistent with the two-component scattering model. More generally, we find that amongst Seyfert 1 galaxies, parallel, perpendicular and intermediate orientations of the polarization position angle relative to the radio axis occur roughly in the proportions 2:1:1.

TL;DR: In this article, a circularly polarized rectangular stair-shaped dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is presented, which is excited by a narrow rectangular slot and rotated 45/spl deg/ with respect to the sides of the DRA to generate circular polarization.
Abstract: A circularly polarized rectangular stair shaped dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is presented. The DRA is excited by a narrow rectangular slot and rotated 45/spl deg/ with respect to the sides of the DRA to generate circular polarization. A parametric study of the length to width ratio to optimize the axial ratio bandwidth is given. A 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 10.6% is achieved when the length to width ratio is 1.9.

TL;DR: In this paper, optical linear polarization maps are presented of the star-forming regions near L1506 in Taurus, L1755 in Ophiuchus, and the complex of dark cloud which extends from L1448 in B5 in Perseus.
Abstract: New optical linear polarization maps are presented of the star-forming regions near L1506 in Taurus, L1755 in Ophiuchus, and the complex of dark cloud which extends from L1448 in B5 in Perseus. The former two show a well-defined peak magnetic field direction in the plane of the sky with a finite dispersion about that peak which is smaller than would be expected for a random distribution of field distributions. The dispersion in the position angle of filamentary clouds within these complexes implies that clouds which appear elongated on the plane of the sky are not all associated with a pattern of polarization vectors particularly parallel or perpendicular to their geometry. Instead, clouds tend to be oriented at the angle formed by their axis and the mean direction of the local large-scale field. For the dark cloud complex, a bimodal distribution of the polarization vector angle is taken to result from at least two distributions of gas along the line of sight which appear as a complex in projection. 55 refs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for combined fiber parameter estimation from digital filter coefficients of a polarization diverse coherent receiver is presented, where all deterministic linear optical channel parameters like residual chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization-mode dispersion, and polarization dependent loss (PDL) are continuously monitored by analysis of the filter impulse response of the adaptive equalizer.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a method for combined fiber parameter estimation from digital filter coefficients of a polarization diverse coherent receiver. All deterministic linear optical channel parameters like residual chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and polarization-dependent loss (PDL) are continuously monitored by analysis of the filter impulse response of the adaptive equalizer. After deriving the according equations from the theoretical linear fiber channel model, we demonstrate robust estimation for a joint combination of all impairments.
