04 Dec 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a wavelength selective add-and-drop multiplexer is described for adding and/or dropping spectral components from a wavelength-division-multiplexed optical signal.
Abstract: A wavelength-selective add-drop multiplexer is disclosed for adding and/or dropping spectral components from a wavelength-division-multiplexed optical signal. (1x1) or (2x2) optical switches are used, either alone or in conjunction with other optical elements, to separate spectral components identified for drop from other spectral components.

TL;DR: In this paper, an optical switch based on the multimode interference coupler is demonstrated and the device is designed and fabricated in polymeric materials and the thermooptic effect of polymers, which has a negative TO coefficient, is employed to change the self-imaging effect of a side-heated MMI coupler and realize optical switching.
Abstract: An optical switch based on the multimode interference (MMI) coupler is demonstrated in this letter. The device is designed and fabricated in polymeric materials and the thermooptic (TO) effect of polymers, which has a negative TO coefficient, is employed to change the self-imaging effect of a side-heated MMI coupler and realize optical switching. The switching power is only 22 mW. The experimental results show that the crosstalk of the switch is about -20 dB at both the cross and bar states.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates photothermally induced optical switching of ultra-compact hybrid Si-VO₂ ring resonators and observes optical modulation greater than 10dB from modest quality-factor (~10³) resonances, as well as a large -1.26 nm change in resonant wavelength Δλ, resulting from the large change in the dielectric function of VO⁂ in the insulator-to-metal transition achieved by optical pumping.
Abstract: We demonstrate photothermally induced optical switching of ultra-compact hybrid Si-VO2 ring resonators. The devices consist of a sub-micron length ~70nm thick patch of phase-changing VO2 integrated onto silicon ring resonators as small as 1.5μm in radius. The semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) of VO2 is triggered using a 532nm pump laser, while optical transmission is probed using a tunable cw laser near 1550nm. We observe optical modulation greater than 10dB from modest quality-factor (~103) resonances, as well as a large –1.26nm change in resonant wavelength Δλ, resulting from the large change in the dielectric function of VO2 in the insulator-to-metal transition achieved by optical pumping.

TL;DR: In this paper, the first evidence of 1.3 μm optical switching was observed using a raised-rib 2×2 structure using epitaxial silicon and diffused homojunctions, which relies on refractive index change induced by injected minority carriers.
Abstract: Silicon‐based optical switches have been fabricated which rely on refractive index change induced by injected minority carriers. Multimode raised‐rib 2×2 structures are fabricated using epitaxial silicon and diffused homojunctions. The first evidence of 1.3 μm optical switching is observed.
