TL;DR: The current status of the field of organic solar cells and the important parameters to improve their performance are discussed in this paper. But, the two competitive production techniques used today are either wet solution processing or dry thermal evaporation of the organic constituents.
Abstract: Organic solar cell research has developed during the past 30 years, but especially in the last decade it has attracted scientific and economic interest triggered by a rapid increase in power conversion efficiencies. This was achieved by the introduction of new materials, improved materials engineering, and more sophisticated device structures. Today, solar power conversion efficiencies in excess of 3% have been accomplished with several device concepts. Though efficiencies of these thin-film organicdevices have not yet reached those of their inorganic counterparts (η ≈ 10–20%); the perspective of cheap production (employing, e.g., roll-to-roll processes) drives the development of organic photovoltaic devices further in a dynamic way. The two competitive production techniques used today are either wet solution processing or dry thermal evaporation of the organic constituents. The field of organic solar cells profited well from the development of light-emitting diodes based on similar technologies, which have entered the market recently. We review here the current status of the field of organic solar cells and discuss different production technologies as well as study the important parameters to improve their performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, a layered sandwich-type architecture is proposed for next-generation dye-sensitized solar cells, which consists of a bicontinuous three-dimensional nanocomposite of mesoporous (mp)-TiO2,w ith CH 3NH3PbII3 perovskite as light harvester, as well as a polymeric hole conductor.
Abstract: Inorganic‐organic hybrid structures have become innovative alternatives for next-generation dye-sensitized solar cells, because they combine the advantages of both systems. Here, we introduce a layered sandwich-type architecture, the core of which comprises a bicontinuous three-dimensional nanocomposite of mesoporous (mp)-TiO2 ,w ith CH 3NH3PbI3 perovskite as light harvester, as well as a polymeric hole conductor. This platform creates new opportunities for the development of low-cost, solution-processed, high-efficiency solar cells. The use of a polymeric hole conductor, especially poly-triarylamine, substantially improves the open-circuit voltage V oc and fill factor of the cells. Solar cells based on these inorganic‐organic hybrids exhibit a short-circuit current density Jsc of 16.5 mA cm 22 , Voc of 0.997 V and fill factor of 0.727, yielding a power conversion efficiency of 12.0% under standard AM 1.5 conditions.

TL;DR: The PBDB-T-SF:IT-4F-based OSC device showed a record high efficiency, and an efficiency of over 12% can be obtained with a thickness of 100-200 nm, suggesting the promise of fullerene-free OSCs in practical applications.
Abstract: A new polymer donor (PBDB-T-SF) and a new small molecule acceptor (IT-4F) for fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs) were designed and synthesized The influences of fluorination on the absorption spectra, molecular energy levels, and charge mobilities of the donor and acceptor were systematically studied The PBDB-T-SF:IT-4F-based OSC device showed a record high efficiency of 131%, and an efficiency of over 12% can be obtained with a thickness of 100–200 nm, suggesting the promise of fullerene-free OSCs in practical applications

TL;DR: Self-organization of liquid crystalline and crystalline-conjugated materials has been used to create, directly from solution, thin films with structures optimized for use in photodiodes, demonstrating that complex structures can be engineered from novel materials by means of simple solution-processing steps and may enable inexpensive, high-performance, thin-film photovoltaic technology.
Abstract: Self-organization of liquid crystalline and crystalline-conjugated materials has been used to create, directly from solution, thin films with structures optimized for use in photodiodes. The discotic liquid crystal hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene was used in combination with a perylene dye to produce thin films with vertically segregated perylene and hexabenzocoronene, with large interfacial surface area. When incorporated into diode structures, these films show photovoltaic response with external quantum efficiencies of more than 34 percent near 490 nanometers. These efficiencies result from efficient photoinduced charge transfer between the hexabenzocoronene and perylene, as well as from effective transport of charges through vertically segregated perylene and hexabenzocoronene pi systems. This development demonstrates that complex structures can be engineered from novel materials by means of simple solution-processing steps and may enable inexpensive, high-performance, thin-film photovoltaic technology.
