TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluate a speciation methodology for organomercury compounds in soil samples, based on the Westoo method, which includes an acid leaching of the soil followed by an organic solvent extraction and a re-extraction with a selective aqueous reagent (cysteine).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a technique for cleaning mercury-contaminated matter capable of easily, inexpensively and effectively removing mercury from the contaminated matter such as soil contaminated with various mercury compounds including not only inorganic mercury compounds but also organomercury compounds.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for cleaning mercury-contaminated matter capable of easily, inexpensively and effectively removing mercury from the mercury-contaminated matter such as soil contaminated with various mercury compounds including not only inorganic mercury compounds but also organomercury compounds without seriously affecting the environment and ecological system. SOLUTION: This technique involves adding a kind of microorganisms belonging to the genus Alteromonas and having the ability to volatilize mercury to the mercury-contaminated matter; wherein the kind of microorganisms (bacteria) is preferably e.g. Alteromonas macleodii SW-22 (FERM BP-7749).
