Abstract: This contribution addresses the problem of detection and tracking of moving vehicles in image sequences from traffic scenes recorded by a stationary camera. In order to exploit the a priori knowledge about the shape and the physical motion of vehicles in traffic scenes, a parameterized vehicle model is used for an intraframe matching process and a recursive estimator based on a motion model is used for motion estimation. The initial guess about the position and orientation for the models are computed with the help of a clustering approach of moving image features. Shadow edges of the models are taken into account in the matching process. This enables tracking of vehicles under complex illumination conditions and within a small effective field of view. Results on real world traffic scenes are presented and open problems are outlined.

Abstract: For medical diagnoses and treatments, it is often desirable to wirelessly trace an object that moves inside the human body. A magnetic tracing technique suggested for such applications uses a small magnet as the excitation source, which does not require the power supply and connection wire. It provides good tracing accuracy and can be easily implemented. As the magnet moves, it establishes around the human body a static magnetic field, whose intensity is related to the magnet's 3-D position and 2-D orientation parameters. With magnetic sensors, these magnetic intensities can be detected in some predetermined spatial points, and the position and orientation parameters can be computed. Typically, a nonlinear optimization algorithm is applied to such a problem, but a linear algorithm is preferable for faster, more reliable computation, and lower complexity. In this paper, we propose a linear algorithm to determine the 5-D magnet's position and orientation parameters. With the data from five (or more) three-axis magnetic sensors, this algorithm results in a solution by the matrix and algebra computations. We applied this linear algorithm on the real localization system, and the results of simulations and real experiments show that satisfactory tracing accuracy can be achieved by using a sensor array with enough three-axis magnetic sensors.

Abstract: A method of generating one or more new spatial and chromatic variation digital images uses an original digitally-acquired image which including a face or portions of a face. A group of pixels that correspond to a face within the original digitally-acquired image is identified. A portion of the original image is selected to include the group of pixels. Values of pixels of one or more new images based on the selected portion are automatically generated, or an option to generate them is provided, in a manner which always includes the face within the one or more new images. Such method may be implemented to automatically establish the correct orientation and color balance of an image. Such method can be implemented as an automated method or a semi automatic method to guide users in viewing, capturing or printing of images.

Abstract: Natural scene classification is a fundamental challenge in computer vision. By far, the majority of studies have limited their scope to scenes from single image stills and thereby ignore potentially informative temporal cues. The current paper is concerned with determining the degree of performance gain in considering short videos for recognizing natural scenes. Towards this end, the impact of multiscale orientation measurements on scene classification is systematically investigated, as related to: (i) spatial appearance, (ii) temporal dynamics and (iii) joint spatial appearance and dynamics. These measurements in visual space, x-y, and spacetime, x-y-t, are recovered by a bank of spatiotemporal oriented energy filters. In addition, a new data set is introduced that contains 420 image sequences spanning fourteen scene categories, with temporal scene information due to objects and surfaces decoupled from camera-induced ones. This data set is used to evaluate classification performance of the various orientation-related representations, as well as state-of-the-art alternatives. It is shown that a notable performance increase is realized by spatiotemporal approaches in comparison to purely spatial or purely temporal methods.
