Abstract: Oxalate films observed on stone monument surfaces deserve greater interest because of their possible role in protecting against deterioration. Their origin remains controversial. We present here the results of research conducted on production of oxalic acid and other organic acids by bacterial communities isolated from two monuments. Both communities were developed in vitro, and oxalate production was evaluated in a context of global metabolic activities that could eventually lead to protection or to degradation of the surface itself. HPLC analyses of organic acids production revealed that all mixed cultures produced oxalic acid but in different amounts. Besides oxalic acid, other organic acids are released that can solubilize stone calcium carbonate and have a deteriorating activity. Calcium carbonate solubilization, evaluated both by mixed cultures and isolated strains, was stronger with mixed cultures than with single strains. Our data show that oxalate production is promoted by the bacterial communiti...

Abstract: Aluminum (III) hydrolysis and precipitation in the presence of acetic acid and oxalic acid have been studied by combining potentiometric titration and liquid-state {sup 27}Al NMR. The main aluminum species have thus been identified and quantified: unreacted hydrolyzed, complexed monomers, and the Al{sub 13} tridecamer. A solid species appeared when precipitation occurred and was quantified by difference with the other species. The quantitative evolution of these species was followed for pH values up to 5. Acetate forms weak complexes with aluminum. The precipitated phase was hypothesized to be aggregated Al{sub 13}. Oxalate forms strong multiligand complexes to form Al{sub 13} requires higher hydroxyl content. High oxalate contents (L/M > 1) inhibit tridecamer formation and precipitation occurs only at high pH values. With oxalate the precipitated phase seems to be devoid of Al{sub 13} and of a more condensed nature than it is with acetate.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mixture of acidic solutions containing cations and oxalic acid was introduced in an open vessel, leading to a poorly-crystallized precipitate, then the starting mixture was placed in an acid digestion bomb then set in an oven in order to reach hydrothermal conditions.
