TL;DR: In this article, an identifier associated with individual data packets is examined to determine whether such an individual packet is suitable for inclusion in a super packet containing data packets associated with the individual data flows.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the aggregation of data packets and to super packets for transmission across a communication network. In accordance with the present invention, an identifier associated with individual data packets is examined to determine whether such individual packet is suitable for inclusion in a super packet containing data packets associated with individual data flows. The identification may be included within a field established for a purpose other than marking an individual data packet in connection with forming aggregate packets. In particular, preexisting data fields may be utilized to identify packets for purposes of forming aggregate data streams.

TL;DR: This paper uses classical control theory to model the congestion control algorithm of the Internet's Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Smith principle to design a new algorithm for congestion control for the high-speed Internet.
Abstract: The explosive growth of the Internet with the ever-increasing demand for network bandwidth makes the issue of congestion control critical. In this paper, we use classical control theory to model the congestion control algorithm of the Internet's Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Smith principle to design a new algorithm for congestion control for the high-speed Internet. The analysis provides a theoretical insight into the congestion control mechanisms of TCP, along with a method to modify and improve this mechanism in a way that is backward-compatible, The proposed control algorithm generalizes today's TCP congestion control algorithm using a generalized advertised window which is obtained by means of round-trip time measurements.

TL;DR: This paper addresses some of the fundamental issues related to videoconferencing systems in a packet-based environment, and discusses the differences with the traditional circuit-switch approaches, namely, the ITU H.320 standard.
Abstract: The Internet explosion is driving the need for new collaboration tools which will enable two or more users to share data, audio, and video. The real-time packet-based solutions which are emerging differ considerably from the circuit-switch solutions which have existed for some time now. In this paper, we present one such packet-based approach, the Multimedia Multiparty Teleconferencing (MMT) system, which was fully implemented as a research prototype. Using MMT as an example, we address some of the fundamental issues related to videoconferencing systems in a packet-based environment, and discuss the differences with the traditional circuit-switch approaches, namely, the ITU H.320 standard. In particular, MMT is a distributed solution, while H.320 is centralized. The use of multicast and a novel video-mixing technique to facilitate the distributed solution are presented. Furthermore, MMT audio and video streams are susceptible to congestion and packet loss in the shared media packet-based environment, while H.320 streams use dedicated connections. As such, synchronization, error resilience, and dynamic rate control schemes for the packet-based system are presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a self-adaptive transmission method and a self adaptive transmission system in the uplink cellular video communication of the wireless multimedia communication technical field, where a feedback-based channel effectively transmits bandwidth perceiving; the sending speed of a data flow is adjusted according to the perceived effective transmission bandwidth, the adjustment of the sending rate is realized by changing the packet length of the data flow; two-stage information resource rate control based on cache cleaning and rate control of an encoder is used.
Abstract: The invention discloses a self-adaptive transmission method and a self-adaptive transmission system in the uplink cellular video communication of the wireless multimedia communication technical field. The method is that: a feedback-based channel effectively transmits bandwidth perceiving; the sending speed of a data flow is adjusted according to the perceived effective transmission bandwidth, the adjustment of the sending rate is realized by changing the packet length of the data flow; two-stage information resource rate control based on cache cleaning and rate control of an encoder is used. The device comprises a sending end, a transmission network and a receiving end, wherein the sending end comprises a video encoding unit and a transmission control unit, the receiving end comprises a transmission control unit and a video decoding unit, the sending end and the receiving end transmit messages through the transmission network. The sending rate of the invention can automatically adapt to the change of the channel bandwidth, decreases the probability of packet loss caused by the fluctuation of the wireless channel bandwidth, and realizes that the customer side can obtain the best possible playing quality under the condition of constant change of network operation conditions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the ability of the phase-control system to tolerate communications latency in a 50kVA diesel generator in a synchronous islanded power network with IP communications.
Abstract: Synchronous islanded operation involves continuously holding an islanded power network in virtual synchronism with the main power system to aid paralleling and avoid potentially damaging out-of-synchronism reclosure. This requires phase control of the generators in the island and the transmission of a reference signal from a secure location on the main power system. Global positioning system (GPS) time-synchronized phasor measurements transmitted via an Internet protocol (IP) are used for the reference signal. However, while offering low cost and a readily available solution for distribution networks, IP communications have variable latency and are susceptible to packet loss, which can make time-critical control applications difficult. This paper investigates the ability of the phase-control system to tolerate communications latency. Phasor measurement conditioning algorithms that can tolerate latency are used in the phase-control loop of a 50-kVA diesel generator.
