Abstract: The design, analysis, and implementation of an end-to-end transport protocol that is capable of high throughput consistent with the evolving high-speed physical networks based on fiber-optic transmission lines and high-capacity switches are presented. Unlike current transport protocols in which changes in control/state information are exchanged between the two communicating entities only when some significant event occurs, this protocol exchanges relevant and full state information periodically and frequently. It is shown that this reduces the complexity of protocol processing by removing many of the procedures required to recover from network inadequacies such as bit errors, packet loss, and out-of-sequence packets and makes it more amenable to parallel processing. Also, to increase channel utilization in the presence of high-speed, long-latency networks and to support diagrams, and efficient implementation of the selective repeat method of error control is incorporated in the protocol. An implementation using a Motorola 68030-based multiprocessor as a front-end processor is described. The current implementation can comfortably handle 10-15 kpackets/s. >

Abstract: While it is often suggested that moderate-scale ad hoc sensor networks are a promising approach to solving real-world problems, most evaluations of sensor network protocols have focused on simulation, rather than realworld, experiments. In addition, most experimental results have been obtained in limited scale. This paper describes a practical application of moderate-scale ad hoc sensor networks. We explore several techniques for reducing packet loss, including quality-based routing and passive acknowledgment, and present an empirical evaluation of the effect of these techniques on packet loss and data freshness.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for enhancing the infrastructure of a network such as the Internet is disclosed. A packet interceptor/processor apparatus is coupled with the network so as to be able to intercept and process packets flowing over the network. Further, the apparatus provides external connectivity to other devices that wish to intercept packets as well. The apparatus applies one or more rules to the intercepted packets which execute one or more functions on a dynamically specified portion of the packet and take one or more actions with the packets. The apparatus is capable of analyzing any portion of the packet including the header and payload. Actions include releasing the packet unmodified, deleting the packet, modifying the packet, logging/storing information about the packet or forwarding the packet to an external device for subsequent processing. Further, the rules may be dynamically modified by the external devices.

Abstract: A mobile ad hoc network is an autonomous system of infrastructureless, multihop wireless mobile nodes. Reactive routing protocols perform well in such an environment due to their ability to cope quickly against topological changes. In this paper, we propose a new routing protocol called Caching and Multipath (CHAMP) Routing Protocol. CHAMP uses cooperative packet caching and shortest multipath routing to reduce packet loss due to frequent route breakdowns. Simulation results reveal that by using a five-packet data cache, CHAMP exhibits excellent improvement in packet delivery, outperforming AODV and DSR by at most 30% in stressful scenarios. Furthermore, end-to-end delay is significantly reduced while routing overhead is lower at high mobility rates.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a timed efficient and secure vehicular communication (TSVC) scheme with privacy preservation, which aims at minimizing the packet overhead in terms of signature overhead and signature verification latency without compromising the security and privacy requirements. Compared with currently existing public key based packet authentication schemes for security and privacy, the communication and computation overhead of TSVC can be significantly reduced due to the short message authentication code (MAC) tag attached in each packet for the packet authentication, by which only a fast hash operation is required to verify each packet. Simulation results demonstrate that TSVC maintains acceptable packet latency with much less packet overhead, while significantly reducing the packet loss ratio compared with that of the existing public key infrastructure (PKI) based schemes, especially when the road traffic is heavy.
