TL;DR: In this paper, an improved device for collecting refuse by using a fixed holding member and moveable expander to releasably hold a bag open by virtue of tension forces exerted across the mouth of the bag.
Abstract: An improved device for collecting refuse by using a fixed holding member and moveable expander to releasably hold a bag open by virtue of tension forces exerted across the mouth of the bag. A paddle, spring-loaded to a closed position across the mouth, can also be hingedly rotated to an open position and held in the open position by a trigger. When an animal owner desires to have the paddle scoop refuse into the bag, he can manually move the trigger. This action releases the spring-biased paddle which then rotates under spring bias, scooping refuse before it, to the closed position. The scooped refuse, because of the propelling movement of the paddle's rotation, is thrown on into the bag. A moving mechanism, which is also spring-biased, can both cock the paddle in the open position and also release the bag. As the moving mechanism pulls the paddle toward the open position, a latch pin connected through a cable to the paddle is caught and held by the trigger. The moving mechanism can then return to its normal resting position under the action of spring bias, while the paddle remains in the caught, cocked position. When it is desired to release the paddle, the trigger is manually depressed and the paddle returns under spring-bias to its normally closed position.

TL;DR: In this paper, a power supply operates a fluid in the sump to deliver fluid into the entrance leg, and the generator is coupled to utilization or storage devices for using or storing the energy harnessed by the generators.
Abstract: An elongated channel has an entrance leg and a parallel exit leg and a loop therebetween at one end and a sump at the other end into which the exit leg empties. A power supply operates a fluid in the sump to deliver fluid into the entrance leg. A plurality of spaced paddle wheels are mounted for rotation on supports above the channel with each paddle wheel having a plurality of spaced substantially radially directed paddles conforming in shape to the space within the channel and being slightly spaced therefrom to inhibit any contact therewith. A plurality of generators are driven by the plurality of paddle wheels, and the generators are coupled to utilization or storage devices for using or storing the energy harnessed by the generators. Additional intermediate legs of the channel and other loops can form a sineous path from the location of delivery of fluid by the pump to the location of emptying of the exit leg into the sump. The paddle wheels in the exit legs are offset from the paddle wheels in the entrance legs, so that a plurality of elongated shafts can connect aligned paddle wheels in the entrance legs, and another plurality of elongated shafts can connect aligned paddle wheels in the exit legs. The generators are connected to the plurality and another plurality of the shafts. The channel may be level with the sump disposed below or it may be slightly higher in elevation at the location of delivery of the fluid into the entrance channel and descend in elevation at the location of emptying of the exit leg into the sump.

Abstract: A simple and accurate procedure to determine the flow properties of powerlaw fluids using a paddle type mixer viscometer is described. The approach considers the mixer as analogous to a concentric cylinder system and incorporates the inclusion of end effects in modeling. The procedure significantly reduces data collection because calibration with standard fluids is not necessary to estimate average shear stress and shear rate values.

TL;DR: A swimmer training paddle with a textured leading surface for increasing a swimmer's arm strength and hand stability is described in this article. But it is not shown to increase the stroke length.
Abstract: A swimmer training paddle with a textured leading surface for increasing a swimmer's arm strength and hand stability is disclosed. The paddle takes the form of a rigid, planar fluid resistance member having a textured first surface that directs and momentarily captures water thereon and a second surface configured to engage a swimmer's hand. The momentary capture of water by the textured paddle increases the thrust achieved with each stroke. Water resistively contacts the textured surface of the paddle for a longer period of time than does water contacting the smooth surface of a conventional paddle. In the preferred embodiment, the textured surface comprises diagonally extending, interconnected, contiguous linear recesses or channels which have been found to provide increased thrust without compromising rotational stability.

TL;DR: In this paper, the level of flowable material in a storage bin is indicated by a paddle mounted within a protective enclosure and coupled by a shaft and clutch arrangement to a paddle disposed within the bin to engage material there within.
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating the level of flowable material in a storage bin that includes a motor mounted within a protective enclosure and coupled by a shaft and clutch arrangement to a paddle disposed within the bin to engage material therewithin. When the material reaches the level of the paddle, drag on the paddle causes the motor to rotate within the enclosure against the force of an adjustable spring to activate switches disposed within the enclosure for indicating material level. The switches also remove power from the motor and apply power to an electrical resistance heater to warm the enclosure and help prevent condensation at low external ambient temperature. The paddle is constructed to enhance drag when used in conjunction with low-density materials.

Abstract: This paper describes a technique for generating short crested waves in a laboratory using a multi element array of paddles. The control signal applied to each paddle in order to create a realistic sea is developed by using the technique of filtering white noise, building upon the preferred method previously used for wave generation in flumes. By using the side walls of the wave basin as reflectors a larger working area can be achieved than by using other techniques, and the need to calculate correlations between paddles in the array avoided.

TL;DR: In this article, a ventilated support plate and friction element are used to reduce the build up of heat during use of a cluttered disc assembly, where a pair of friction elements are secured to the opposed sides of each of the paddles.
Abstract: A clutch driven disc assembly includes a ventilated support plate and friction element to reduce the build up of heat during use. The support plate includes a plurality of radially extending paddles. A pair of friction elements are secured to the opposed sides of each of the paddles. Each paddle has a plurality of generally parallel slots formed therethrough. The slots may extend generally radially or generally circumferentially relative to the paddle. Each of the friction elements includes a corrugated backing plate having a friction facing secured thereto. The corrugations define a plurality of raised channels in the backing plate. The raised channels are formed such that they are aligned with the slots formed through the support plate when the friction elements are secured to the paddle. Such alignment provides a plurality of channels for the passage of air therethrough as the driven disc assembly rotates during use. Such air flow is helpful in cooling the friction facings when the clutch is engaged and disengaged.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable higher controlling accuracy by using a forecast runoff turbidity at a sediment pond as calculated from a very small amount of floc per unit capacity determined from image information at the rear of a floc formation pond as feedback control factor to control paddle revolutions to reduce control delay time. CONSTITUTION:A turbidimeter 6 is attached at an incoming water well 1 to measure turbidity of a stock and a turbidimeter 7 at a sediment pond 5 to measure a runoff turbidity. A coagulant injection controller 8 controls the injec tion of a coagulant. A paddle 4 is set at a floc formation pond 3 to stir up a water to be treated. A revolutions controller 10 controls a motor 9 for rotating the paddle. An under water camera 11 is attached at the final stage of the floc formation pond 3. A floc measuring device 12 determines an average parti cle size of floc and a very small amount of floc per unit capacity of the water to be treated based on image information from the camera 11 while determining a maximum floc particle size from an intensity of rotation of the paddle. The rotation intensity of the paddle is controlled based on these values to reduce paddle control delay time with a higher controlling accuracy.

TL;DR: In this paper, a wave channel with and without consideration of 2nd order wave components in the control signal for the wave paddle was carried out in a 1:30 sloped bottom starting 57.00 m in front of the paddle.
Abstract: Model tests have been carried out in a wave channel with and without consideration of 2nd order wave components in the control signal for the wave paddle. The wave channel was equipped with a 1:30 sloped bottom starting 57.00 m in front of the paddle. The water depth was 1.00 m during all tests. The Self-Correcting System was proved to be able to suppress unwanted free higher and lower harmonics during the generation process. On the slope measured amplitudes of the 2nd order waves were lower than predicted by 2nd order theory. Commonly used wave height parameters are not influenced significantly by the type of control signal.
