TL;DR: The haptic paddle as discussed by the authors is a low-cost, single-axis force-feedback joystick that can be used in the laboratory component of an undergraduate course on dynamic systems, where students not only learned to model and analyze dynamic systems but they also felt the effects of viscous damping, stiffness, and inertia.
Abstract: As an innovative approach to providing physical demonstrations in the engineering classroom, we present the haptic paddle: a low-cost, single-axis force-feedback joystick. Using the paddle in the laboratory component of an undergraduate course on dynamic systems, students not only learned to model and analyze dynamic systems, but they also felt the effects of phenomena such as viscous damping, stiffness, and inertia. By interacting with virtual environments using their sense of touch, students improved their understanding of dynamic systems, modeling and control. In addition, the paddles added entertainment and excitement to the course. In this paper, we describe the purpose and design of the haptic paddle, show examples of how the paddle was integrated into the course, and present the results of preliminary student evaluations.

TL;DR: In this article, a mechanically stirred eight-blade paddle impeller in an unbaffled vessel over a range of Reynolds numbers covering laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes is presented.
Abstract: CFD-based computations of the flow field, power consumption and mixing time are presented for a mechanically stirred eight-blade paddle impeller in an unbaffled vessel over a range of Reynolds numbers covering laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes. The flow field calculations were performed using the sliding mesh technique to account for the motion of the impeller, and mixing time studies were done using a simulated tracer injection experiment. The effect of grid density and the choice of the turbulence model were investigated. The results are compared with flow field data from Dong et al . 1 , and power and mixing time correlations from the literature and show satisfactory agreement. It is shown that the product of mixing time and rotational speed remains constant for paddle impellers for laminar flow and that the use of a low Reynolds number turbulence model is necessary for good prediction of mixing time in the transitional flow.

TL;DR: This paper describes how a table tennis robot with a flat paddle coordinates its movement in order to achieve efficient strokes for any given ball through a method of generating stroke movement based on virtual targets.
Abstract: This paper describes how a table tennis robot with a flat paddle coordinates its movement in order to achieve efficient strokes for any given ball. We propose a method of generating stroke movement based on virtual targets that means the point at which the ball should be struck and the paddle velocity just before hitting the ball. These targets are predicted using inputs-outputs maps implemented efficiently by means of a k-d tree (k dimensional tree). The paddle approaches these targets by using a visual feedback control scheme similar to the mirror law proposed by Koditschek. The results of the implementation are also given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: A feet-propelled water vehicle including a buoyant body having a user-supporting platform attached to a rigid frame secured to a pair of pontoons. A pair of propelling paddles is attached to the rigid frame. Each propelling paddle defines a corresponding effectuating section and a corresponding blade section. The supporting platform defines flexible foot contacting regions for transferring the weight shifting action of an intended user to the effectuating sections of a corresponding propelling paddle. Each effectuating section allows the transformation of the force generated by the foot of the user into a corresponding pivotal movement of the paddle relative to the frame. The blade section attached to the effectuating section allows transformation of the pivotal movement of the paddle into a vehicle propelling force for propelling the vehicle across a body of water.

TL;DR: A spring loaded switch with a paddle that pivots about its upper end and is biased to assume the same at rest position when either in its on position or off position as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The instant invention overcomes the deficiencies with respect to prior art devices by providing a spring loaded switch having a paddle that pivots about its upper end and is biased to assume the same at rest position when either in its on position or off position. Repeated pressing and releasing the lower portion of the face of the switch paddle alternately closes and opens a set of contacts within the switch to alternately connect and disconnect a load from a source of electricity each time the arm is pressed. Thus, regardless of whether adjacent switches are on-off switches or 3-way switches, they will always be in alignment. An on-off indicator such as a small light, a flag in a window, a mechanical protrusion of the like can be provided to indicate to a user when the contacts of the switch are opened or closed. The paddle of the switch has a length-width ratio dimension that is proportioned to provide a finger contact surface of increased area to allow a user to more easily and quickly identify and operate a particular switch. The contour of the cover plate around the switch along a section which runs along its vertical axis defines a new functional surface shape of positive first differential and zero second differential, comprised of a combination of splines drawn between points of varying distance from a datum plane. The contour has zero second differential when the rate of height increase of individual splines is constant. The front surface or face of the switch follows the contours and shape of the cover plate. In those instances where the wiring device is a receptacle, the contour along the width of the face is flat in one plane and the contour along the length of the face has a constant radius. The shape of the front of the receptacle allows for the proper seating of an inserted plug.

TL;DR: The whole air hockey system hardware is composed of a robot, a CCD and a PC, and it is shown that the robot play the air hockey game with human beings in a standard puck sliding speed.
Abstract: "Air-hockey" is an interesting table game. Two sides' players hold the paddle trying to strike the puck on the table into the opponent's goal to get scores. This paper tries to implement the whole air hockey system. The system hardware is composed of a robot, a CCD and a PC. The CCD catches the image of the puck on the game table. The PC processes the image to identify the puck's location and estimate the puck's sliding speed and route such that the robot can strikes the puck precisely. The robot movement and its paddle operation are controlled by the technique of fuzzy logic. In the final experiment, we show that the robot play the air hockey game with human beings in a standard (not too fast) puck sliding speed.
