TL;DR: Results from the present series of tests indicate that the mini paddle apparatus is a useful tool in characterizing drug release profiles under “standard test conditions” and further downsize the setup with maintaining the significance of the compendial setup.
Abstract: Results from the present series of tests indicate that the mini paddle apparatus is a useful tool in characterizing drug release profiles under “standard test conditions”. Due to the possibility of using smaller sample sizes and smaller volumes of media, it offers various advantages in terms of substance, analytical, and material cost savings when evaluating release properties of drug candidates. The mini paddle setup is also a promising alternative if the analytics are not very sensitive or in the case of highly potent drugs. Because the size and shape of dosage forms can also impact drug release, the mini paddle should preferably be used for powders, multiparticulate dosage forms, and small tablets or capsules (i.e., where the paddle apparatus would be the usual method of choice). Nowadays, there are various types of mini paddle systems available on the market. However, most of these systems reflect everything but a miniaturized reproduction of the USP paddle system. For this reason, the outcome of the present study should not be generalized since changing the dimensions of the setup can quickly result in alterations of the hydrodynamics which, as has been shown in the present study, can have a huge impact on drug release from the dosage form tested. The next steps would be therefore to check, if it is possible to further downsize the setup with maintaining the significance of the compendial setup, to determine the impact of experimental settings on drug release from MR formulations and to measure/simulate flow velocities in the mini vessel.

TL;DR: In this article, a minimal maintenance paddle wheel electric generator for producing no-cost electricity is described, where the A-frame base is disposed in a fast flowing stream with a paddle wheel mounted between a-frame supports, with the supports resting on the base, and the paddle wheel including radially arranged dip blades with the rotation of the paddlewheel by the swiftly running water turning a drive gear that engages a series of reduction gears that, in turn, actuate a generator.
Abstract: A minimal maintenance paddle wheel electric generation device for producing no cost electricity includes an A-frame base disposed in a fast flowing stream with a paddle wheel mounted between A-frame supports, with the supports resting on the base, and the paddle wheel including radially arranged dip blades with the rotation of the paddle wheel by the swiftly running water turning a drive gear that engages a series of reduction gears that, in turn, actuate a generator for producing electricity. A pair of paddle wheels can be ganged together on several floating members with the floating members tethered by cables to stanchions fixed on opposed banks of the stream. The paddle wheel can also be supported on buoyant inflatable tubes that have curvilinear members attached to the rear ends for directing water into the channel formed between the tubes thereby enhancing water flow and the angular speed of the paddle wheel for increased power generation.

TL;DR: A speed sensor system that utilises the reflectance of infrared light against a flexible paddle that bends in relation to the flow of water over the study animal, which holds promise for the measurement of speed in free-living, aquatic animals.
Abstract: Speed is a key determinant of energy expenditure in free-living animals, and particu- larly in marine vertebrates, where power requirements for swimming increase as a cubed function of the speed. However, current devices used to measure swim speed in free-living animals have limita- tions, including excessive drag, low resolution, high stall speed (ca. 0.3 m s -1 ), cost, biofouling and susceptibility to damage. We present a speed sensor system that utilises the reflectance of infrared light against a flexible paddle that bends in relation to the flow of water over the study animal. In lab- oratory trials, this performed well across a range of speeds (0.1 to 1.75 m s -1 ), and had a stall speed of 0.1 m s -1 . The advantages of this present paddle system are that it is impervious to the presence of matter in the water column, is inexpensive and easily replaceable. Furthermore, the system is able to record speed data at an unparalleled resolution, limited solely by sampling frequency. Data from deployments of devices on free-living imperial cormorants Phalacrocorax atriceps identified changes in speed within and between swim strokes, and also showed that greater speed was generated per kick as the buoyancy decreased with depth. As such, the flexible paddle system holds promise for the measurement of speed in free-living, aquatic animals.

Abstract: We have fabricated suspended metal paddle resonators with carbon nanotubes functioning as self-detecting torsional springs. We observe gate-tunable resonances that either tune to higher or to lower frequencies when increasing the dc voltage on the back gate. We attribute the former modes to flexural vibrations of the paddle resonator, while the latter ones are identified as torsional vibrations. Compared to top-down silicon fabricated paddle resonators, nanotube springs have smaller torsional spring constants and provide a larger frequency tunability.

Abstract: The utility model relates to a self-adaptive torsion spring speed adjusting type wind power generator which can adjust the rotate speed of the blade according to the condition of the wind speed, consisting of a blade with a changeable paddle distance and a machine head, wherein, the blade with a changeable paddle distance is arranged in the hub of the machine head end, and the high strength spring is sleeved between the bottom of a paddle shaft and an adjust fastening nut. When the blade rotates around the paddle shaft and changes the paddle distance, the high strength spring is compressed or flicked; in working, when the wind speed is in the rated wind speed, the windward stress of the blade is in balance with the spring torsion, and the windward angle does not change; and when the wind speed exceeds the rated wind speed, the blade overcomes the spring torsion and rotates around the shaft to change the paddle distance and realize the speed adjusting; after feathering the paddle, in the condition of wind power reducing, the blade shaft is out of the paddle feathering state in the torsion effect, realizing the automatic replacement of the blade.

TL;DR: A baseball training bat with a square handle and a paddle coupled to the square handle is described in this paper, where a face of the paddle is aligned with a side of the handle.
Abstract: A baseball training bat is provided with a square handle and a paddle coupled to the square handle. A face of the paddle is aligned with a side of the square handle. The thumb is placed on the handle in conjunction with a wide side of the bat. This helps the hitter to get square to the ball by keeping his or her top hand in a palm up position. When the hitter swings the training bat, the top hand is palm up so the wide side of the bat can strike a ball. This forces the hitter to get the hands under the ball and take the proper path to the ball. The flat paddle gives the hitter instant feedback and lets the hitter know when they correctly hit the ball with a line drive. Other embodiments are provided.

TL;DR: To reduce the risk for paddle sports fatalities, boating organizations and water-sport enforcement agencies should encourage boater safety education, use of PFDs, and avoidance of alcohol before and during boating.
Abstract: In 2006, approximately 70 million persons in the United States participated in recreational boating, and paddle sports vessels (i.e., canoes, kayaks, and inflatable rafts) made up the fastest-growing segment of the boating market. From 2005 to 2006, canoe sales in the United States increased by 23%, and kayak sales increased by 11%, while powerboat sales decreased by 5%. To analyze the trends and characteristics of deaths associated with paddle sports, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services examined data on fatalities that occurred during 2000-2007. The results of this analysis determined that paddle sports deaths were associated with inexperience, alcohol use, and not using a personal flotation device (PFD). To reduce the risk for paddle sports fatalities, boating organizations and water-sport enforcement agencies should encourage boater safety education, use of PFDs, and avoidance of alcohol before and during boating.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new function in a homogenizer with a laboratory paddle used together with a sterilized inspection bag, and to carry out homogenizing in a short time under the optimum condition. SOLUTION: Essential cleaning for the paddle and a cavity part of the homogenizer are quickly and efficiently carried out because attaching and detaching are very easily carried out without using a tool by a novel paddle. The bag filled with the specimen and a liquid is easily inserted into the homogenizer when homogenizing in the next, because the two paddles are stopped at the same time on the same plane by an optical or another type sensor. A volume of a space between the paddle and a door is regulated easily without using the tool, while looking with eyes by advancing or retreating back the whole of a motor and the paddle, for regulating a crushing force of the homogenizer by a size, hardness and a property of the specimen. The characteristic homogenizer makes the homogenizing efficient and safe, and shortens remarkably the time therefor. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
