TL;DR: The maximum time after which a harbour seal could indicate the moving direction of an artificial fish tail is determined and the hydrodynamic parameters allowing the discrimination are analysed.
Abstract: Harbour seals can use their vibrissal system to detect and follow hydrodynamic trails left by moving objects. In this study we determined the maximum time after which a harbour seal could indicate the moving direction of an artificial fish tail and analysed the hydrodynamic parameters allowing the discrimination. Hydrodynamic trails were generated using a fin-like paddle moving from left to right or from right to left in the calm water of an experimental box. The blindfolded seal was able to recognise the direction of the paddle movement when the hydrodynamic trail was up to 35 s old. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) revealed that the seal might have perceived and used two different hydrodynamic parameters to determine the moving direction of the fin-like paddle. The structure and spatial arrangement of the vortices in the hydrodynamic trail and high water velocities between two counter-rotating vortices are characteristic of the movement direction and are within the sensory range of the seal.

TL;DR: In this article, a computer simulation model was developed to assess the lower limb contribution to kayak performance, and three simulated movements were compared in terms of paddle tip velocity, force impulse, and mechanical work.
Abstract: Lower limb contribution in flatwater kayaking is difficult to quantify experimentally because lower-limbs and pelvis are hidden in the kayak. A computer simulation model was developed to assess the lower limb contribution to kayak performance. Three simulated movements were compared in terms of paddle tip velocity, force impulse, and mechanical work. The pelvis motion increased the paddle tip velocity by 0.15 m s−1 at the stroke beginning and 0.34 m s−1 afterward. The propulsive impulse was also modified by pelvis rotation with a 3.5 N s increase per stroke. For a set performance, the co-ordination involving the lower limbs decreased the mechanical work by 20 J. The above results were obtained by modelling the Ergometer-Athlete-Paddle {EAP} system using 18 bodies and 31 degrees of freedom. The motion capture data were transformed in generalized coordinate time histories by solving an inverse kinematics problem with optimization in order to assess both lower limb and upper limb positions and produce a cyclic motion. Then the {EAP} was simulated based on Lagrangian dynamics with Lagrange multipliers to introduce the paddle forces. Finally, the joint torques were calculated by solving an inverse dynamics problem with optimization in order to ensure a good distribution of lower limbs actuating torques.

Abstract: An exercise machine adapted for training watersports athletes has a pair of spaced-apart vertical columns each with hollow tubular body with a weighted plunger attached to a cable for vertical reciprocation while a user performs power and return stroke movements on an instrument attached to the other end of the cable. The plunger is hydraulically coupled to an air channel fed by an air-through valve sized to control air movement into the air channel by the rising plunger during a power stroke to approximate water resistance to an oar, paddle or arm in the water. The air channel has a release opening for releasing air balanced against the weight of the falling plunger to approximate lifting an oar, paddle, or arm out of the water on a return stroke. The exercise machine can be used to practice a wide range of watersports training exercises for swimming, paddleboarding, canoe paddling, rowing, etc.

TL;DR: The Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC) as discussed by the authors is an oscillating wave surge converter designed to capture the horizontal (surge) water motion in near-shore waves.
Abstract: An Oscillating Wave Surge Converter designed to capture the horizontal (surge) water motion in near-shore waves. The OWSC includes a paddle, one edge of which is hinge-attached to a stationary horizontal platform oriented to expose the paddle surface to the wave action. Variations in the amount of wave energy an OWSC is able to capture and convert into a more useful form are undesirable. These variations have several sources, including tide-driven depth variations of the water in which the OWSC is deployed, and variations in local wave conditions. The OWSC reduces these energy-conversion variations by varying the surface area of the OWSC paddle. The paddle surface area is varied by changing the extent to which multiple layers comprising the paddle overlap. Controlled variation of the paddle area reduces undesirable variations in the energy captured and converted.

TL;DR: In this paper, an embedded or etched paddle that rotates rigidly about an axis parallel to that of the cantilever with hinges that connect the paddle to the body is detected using radiation irradiating the paddle; the reflected beam is centered onto a four quadrant photodiode as commonly found in AFM.
Abstract: A microcantilever used in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) includes an elongated cantilevered body with a probe tip placed preferably near its free end and preferably along the cantilever's axis. Some embodiments of the present invention integrate into the microcantilever body an embedded or etched paddle that rotates rigidly about an axis parallel to that of the cantilever with hinges that connect the paddle to the cantilever body. In one embodiment the resonance frequency of this paddle resonator is higher than the fundamental resonance of the microcantilever so that the paddle rotation is proportional to the vertical microcantilever acceleration at the hinge location. The motion of the paddle can be detected using radiation irradiating the paddle; the reflected beam is centered onto a four quadrant photodiode as commonly found in AFM. The paddle's vertical motion is detected in the usual way by monitoring the vertical channel in the photodiode while its rotation is monitored from the lateral channel in the photodiode. By monitoring the vertical tip acceleration signal from the paddle rotation, it is possible to resolve the history of tip-sample force during oscillation cycles. A calibration method to convert the measured paddle rotation into vertical probe tip acceleration and instantaneous tip-sample force is also disclosed.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a series of experiments conducted to model a magnetorheological damper operated in shear mode. The prototype MR damper consists of two parallel steel plates; a paddle covered with an MR fluid coated foam is placed between the plates. The force is generated when the paddle is in motion and the MR fluid is reached by the magnetic field of the coil in one end of the device. Two approaches were considered in this experiment: a parametric approach based on the Bingham, Bouc-Wen and Hyperbolic Tangent models and a non parametric approach based on a Neural Network model. The accuracy to reproduce the MR damper behavior is compared as well as some aspects related to performance are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the performance of traditional boat racing paddles with those used in Asian boat racing and found that the traditional macon type paddle would be easier to control, and the leaf shaped paddle used in snake boat racing would have the highest coefficient of drag.
Abstract: The design of paddles used in canoe racing has been the subject of considerable research, with specialised designs for flat water racing (canoe sprint), surf and white water canoeing. The paddles used in Asian boat racing remain much closer to traditional designs. To examine the effect of this development, the pressure distribution and coefficient of drag for canoe paddle blades are compared to the paddle designs used in Asian boat races. The pressure distribution on the face of the paddle was examined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and drag forces and the coefficient of drag were examined experimentally in a water tunnel. The results show that although the CFD predicts considerable variation in performance, experimental testing showed much lower variation in the performance of the paddles. The results show that the modern macon type paddle would be easiest to control, and the leaf shaped paddle used in snakeboat racing would have the highest coefficient of drag.
