TL;DR: In this article, a planing and skipping of a rectangular paddle on the surface of a shallow stream was studied, and it was concluded that the rise of water ahead of the paddle, in particular the way this varies over time, is responsible for causing the planing state to become unstable.
Abstract: Experiments are conducted to study the planing and skipping of a rectangular paddle on the surface of a shallow stream. The paddle is allowed to move freely up and down by attaching it to a pivoted arm. A steady planing state, in which the lift force from the water balances the weight on the paddle, is found to be stable for small stream velocities but to become unstable above a certain threshold velocity which depends upon the weight and the angle of attack. Above this threshold, the paddle oscillates in the water and can take off into a continual bouncing, or skipping, motion, with a well-defined amplitude and frequency. The transition is sometimes bistable so that both a steady planing state and a regular skipping state are possible for the same experimental parameters. Shallow-water theory is used to construct simple models that explain the qualitative features of the planing and skipping states in the experiments. It is found that a simple parameterisation of the lift force on the paddle proportional to the depth of entry is not sufficient to explain the observations, and it is concluded that the rise of water ahead of the paddle, in particular the way this varies over time, is responsible for causing the planing state to become unstable and for enabling a continual skipping state.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a system to quantify the forces generated on each side of the kayak paddle (left and right), in the blades' plane of maximal force application and in other planes, and to gain more insights about the on-water paddling force profile and associated variables.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop a system (FPaddle system) to quantify the forces generated on each side of the kayak paddle (left and right), in the blades’ plane of maximal force application and in other planes, and to gain more insights about the on-water paddling force profile and associated variables. Using the FPaddle system forces applied on the paddle by an elite female kayaker were measured. Results suggested that the use of strain gages on two different planes provides more detailed information about the forces applied on the paddle throughout the paddling stroke including the exit phase relatively to the used of strain gages only in the plane of maximal force application.

TL;DR: A hybrid mechanism of a wheeground a paddle as drive mechanism itself to realize an effective movement on the border such as a coast with debris after a disaster like a seismic sea wave or a tanker grounding accident is proposed.
Abstract: This paper describes a combination mechanism of a wheeground a paddle to realize an effective movement on the border of ground and water. For the conventional mobile mechanisms on water or on ground the combination of the mechanism to the body of the robot separately, and each one can be the interruption to the other in each field. In this research, we propose a hybrid mechanism of a wheeground a paddle as drive mechanism itself to realize an effective movement on the border such as a coast with debris after a disaster like a seismic sea wave or a tanker grounding accident. A prototype robot has been built and basic experiments on its motion have been conducted.

TL;DR: Analysis by multiple linear regression revealed major influences on the effectiveness of the magic trick of object height and object area, demonstrating the applicability of analysing key factors of magic tricks to reveal limits of the perceptual system.
Abstract: Following Gustav Kuhn's inspiring technique of using magicians' acts as a source of insight into cognitive sciences, we used the 'paddle move' for testing the psychophysics of combined movement trajectories. The paddle move is a standard technique in magic consisting of a combined rotating and tilting movement. Careful control of the mutual speed parameters of the two movements makes it possible to inhibit the perception of the rotation, letting the 'magic' effect emerge--a sudden change of the tilted object. By using 3-D animated computer graphics we analysed the interaction of different angular speeds and the object shape/size parameters in evoking this motion disappearance effect. An angular speed of 540 degrees s(-1) (1.5 rev. s(-1)) sufficed to inhibit the perception of the rotary movement with the smallest object showing the strongest effect. 90.7% of the 172 participants were not able to perceive the rotary movement at an angular speed of 1125 degrees s(-1) (3.125 rev. s(-1)). Further analysis by multiple linear regression revealed major influences on the effectiveness of the magic trick of object height and object area, demonstrating the applicability of analysing key factors of magic tricks to reveal limits of the perceptual system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flipped top source low-side MOSFET is connected to the top surface of the die paddle and thus is grounded through the exposed bottom surface of die paddle.
Abstract: A combined packaged power semiconductor device includes a flipped top source low-side MOSFET electrically connected to a top surface of a die paddle, a first metal interconnection plate connecting between a bottom drain of a high-side MOSFET or a top source of a flipped high-side MOSFET to a bottom drain of the low-side MOSFET, and a second metal interconnection plate stacked on top of the high-side MOSFET chip. The high-side, low-side MOSFET and the IC controller can be packaged three-dimensionally that reduces the overall size of semiconductor devices and can maximize the chip's size within a package of the same size and improves the performance of the semiconductor devices. The top source of flipped low-side MOSFET is connected to the top surface of the die paddle and thus is grounded through the exposed bottom surface of die paddle, which simplifies the shape of exposed bottom surface of the die paddle and maximizes the area to facilitate heat dissipation.

TL;DR: A wave energy converter (WEC) designed to capture the predominantly horizontal (surge) water motion in near-shore waves is called a Surge-type WEC as mentioned in this paper, which consists of a moveable paddle that faces and resists the wave motion, in a way that converts the energy of wave motion into a more useful form, such as electricity.
Abstract: A wave-energy converter (WEC) designed to capture the predominantly horizontal (surge) water motion in near-shore waves is called a Surge-type WEC. A Surge-type WEC comprises a moveable paddle that faces and resists the wave motion, in a way that converts the energy of the wave motion into a more useful form, such as electricity. The challenge addressed by the present invention is the efficient capture of the energy contained in the entire water column, from the seabed to the surface. This is a challenge because the height of the water column (depth) varies both within waves and with the tide. Capture of the full water column is accomplished using a floating paddle. The top of the paddle is pinned to the water surface by buoyancy. The lower portion of the water column is captured differently in different embodiments.

TL;DR: In this article, an independent paddle change control method and device of a large-scale wind generator system are used for realizing the independent paddle changes control of the wind generator in the method that the load of a spindle of a fan and the position angle of a wind wheel are measured to obtain horizontal axis bending moment and vertical axis bending moments on a hub fixed-coordinate system.
Abstract: The invention provides an independent paddle change control method and device of a large-scale wind generator system, which are used for realizing the independent paddle change control of the wind generator system in the method that the load of a spindle of a fan and the position angle of a wind wheel are measured to obtain horizontal axis bending moment and vertical axis bending moment on a hub fixed-coordinate system. According to the device and the method, the load of the spindle can be measured by only arranging an optical strain transducer on the spindle, so that the number of the optical strain transducer can be reduced. As the spindle does not move relative to a hub, so that measurement and signal transmission are relatively simple, and the improvement of the reliability of load signals can be facilitated. Therefore, as sensors adopted by the device and the method are few, the cost can be reduced; and as a measurement scheme needed for fixing the spindle is simple and easy to realize, and long-time delay is avoided, so that the measurement result can be relatively accurate and has high reliability, and the control result can be more ideal.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on a set of trials of a relatively high powered and high rotational speed paddle wheel fastened to a purpose built 8m long planing skiff which achieved speeds in excess of 32 knots.
Abstract: The paddle wheel has existed as a marine propulsor for in excess of two hundred years yet has been developed little over the last one hundred years. It could be concluded that the paddle has stagnated as a means of efficient propulsion for today‟s marine vessels. As technology develops in other areas, is it possible that paddle propulsion could find applications not yet considered? Has the paddle reached its maximum potential? This paper challenges the assumption that paddle forms of propulsion are ineffective at high rotational speeds through two means: a report on a set of trials of a relatively high powered and high rotational speed paddle wheel fastened to a purpose built 8m long planing skiff which achieved speeds in excess of 32 knots; and results from previous experimental work on paddles, carried out in the Denny experiment tank at Dumbarton, Scotland, were non-dimensionalised, replotted and applied to predict and interpret the performance of the paddle operated on the planing skiff. The paddle achieves propulsion through a relatively large swept area, thus achieving the potential for relatively high efficiency of propulsion. The present design operated with low immersion, up to about 75mm, but at lower immersions down to 5mm at higher speeds, in the wake behind an immersed transom stern. The paper reports on performance of this paddle and interprets the results in the light of the existing historical experimental results.
