TL;DR: To obtain a rectangular shape to maximize performance, kayak paddlers should seek a stronger water phase with a rapid increase in force immediately after blade entry, and a quick exit before the force dropping far below the maximum force when training at race pace and in competition.
Abstract: In sprint kayaking the role that paddling technique plays in optimizing paddle forces and resultant kayak kinematics is still unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the magnitude and shape of the paddle force–time curve at different stroke rates, and their implications for kayak performance. Ten elite kayak paddlers (5 males and 5 females) were analyzed while performing 2000-m on-water trials, at 4 different paces (60, 80, and 100 strokes per minute, and race pace). The paddle and kayak were instrumented with strain gauges and accelerometers, respectively. For both sexes, the force–time curves were characterized at training pace by having a bell shape and at race pace by a first small peak, followed by a small decrease in force and then followed by a main plateau. The force profile, represented by the mean force/peak force ratio, became more rectangular with increasing stroke rate (F[3,40] = 7.87, P < .01). To obtain a rectangular shape to maximize performance, kayak paddlers should seek a stronger...

TL;DR: A novel paddle-based rotating-shield brachytherapy method, whose radiation-attenuating shields are formed with a multileaf collimator (MLC), consisting of retractable paddles, to achieve intensity modulation in high-dose-rate brachyTherapy, produces treatment plans that are dosimetrically and temporally superior to those of S- RSBT and D-RSBT, although P-RS BT systems may be more mechanically challenging to develop.
Abstract: Purpose: The authors present a novel paddle-based rotating-shield brachytherapy (P-RSBT) method, whose radiation-attenuating shields are formed with a multileaf collimator (MLC), consisting of retractable paddles, to achieve intensity modulation in high-dose-rate brachytherapy. Methods: Five cervical cancer patients using an intrauterine tandem applicator were considered to assess the potential benefit of the P-RSBT method. The P-RSBT source used was a 50 kV electronic brachytherapy source (Xoft Axxent™). The paddles can be retracted independently to form multiple emission windows around the source for radiation delivery. The MLC was assumed to be rotatable. P-RSBT treatment plans were generated using the asymmetric dose–volume optimization with smoothness control method [Liu et al., Med. Phys. 41(11), 111709 (11pp.) (2014)] with a delivery time constraint, different paddle sizes, and different rotation strides. The number of treatment fractions (fx) was assumed to be five. As brachytherapy is delivered as a boost for cervical cancer, the dose distribution for each case includes the dose from external beam radiotherapy as well, which is 45 Gy in 25 fx. The high-risk clinical target volume (HR-CTV) doses were escalated until the minimum dose to the hottest 2 cm3 (D 2cm3 ) of either the rectum, sigmoid colon, or bladder reached their tolerance doses of 75, 75, and 90 Gy3, respectively, expressed as equivalent doses in 2 Gy fractions (EQD2 with α/β = 3 Gy). Results: P-RSBT outperformed the two other RSBT delivery techniques, single-shield RSBT (S-RSBT) and dynamic-shield RSBT (D-RSBT), with a properly selected paddle size. If the paddle size was angled at 60°, the average D 90 increases for the delivery plans by P-RSBT on the five cases, compared to S-RSBT, were 2.2, 8.3, 12.6, 11.9, and 9.1 Gy10, respectively, with delivery times of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 min/fx. The increases in HR-CTV D 90, compared to D-RSBT, were 16.6, 12.9, 7.2, 3.7, and 1.7 Gy10, respectively. P-RSBT HR-CTV D 90-values were insensitive to the paddle size for paddles angled at less than 60°. Increasing the paddle angle from 5° to 60° resulted in only a 0.6 Gy10 decrease in HR-CTV D 90 on average for five cases when the delivery times were set to 15 min/fx. The HR-CTV D 90 decreased to 2.5 and 11.9 Gy10 with paddle angles of 90° and 120°, respectively. Conclusions: P-RSBT produces treatment plans that are dosimetrically and temporally superior to those of S-RSBT and D-RSBT, although P-RSBT systems may be more mechanically challenging to develop than S-RSBT or D-RSBT. A P-RSBT implementation with 4–6 shield paddles would be sufficient to outperform S-RSBT and D-RSBT if delivery times are constrained to less than 15 min/fx.

Abstract: In this study, electric generation capacity of a hydropower system was evaluated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and simulation. Performance of paddle wheels in producing hydropower out of running water under different speeds was evaluated, and effects of side and bottom fins and paddle wheel shape on power generation were discussed based on the CFD results. It was also found that, compared to the regular straight paddles, the curved paddles can increase the electricity generation capacity of the entire system by 10–20 % at different water speeds. A preliminary economic analysis revealed the great prospects of applying the presented hydropower technology in regions with rich water resource to produce and supply low-cost, clean, and renewable electricity for a large amount of households and industries.

TL;DR: In this article, a model based on the theory of Markov chains has been developed to represent the residence time distribution (RTD) of municipal sewage sludge in a continuous paddle dryer.
Abstract: A model based on the theory of Markov chains has been developed to represent the residence time distribution (RTD) of municipal sewage sludge in a continuous paddle dryer. The flow of dry solids is described by a chain of n perfectly mixed cells, n corresponding to the number of paddles attached to the shaft. The transition probabilities between the cells are governed by two parameters: the parameter of internal recirculation, R, and the solids hold-up, Hu. In the absence of available correlation, both parameters are identified by fitting the model to experimental RTD data. The model demonstrates its ability to describe the sludge flow in a continuous lab-scale paddle dryer. A sensitivity analysis highlights that R is critical for the treatment uniformity while Hu controls the mean residence time and thus the final moisture content.

TL;DR: In this article, a torsional conductive see-saw paddle suspended by two torsion springs from a substrate with symmetric electrodes under each paddle wing is used for high sensitivity chemo-mechanical sensors.
Abstract: In this paper we present a new kind of high sensitivity chemo-mechanical sensors. These devices consist of a torsional conductive see-saw paddle suspended by two torsional springs from a substrate with symmetric electrodes under each paddle wing. One of the wings is coated with a thin chemically sensitive polymer layer that swells when a specific compound vapor is absorbed. The absorption induced swelling thus causes wing bending and downward deflection proportional to the vapor concentration. Upon application of a fixed DC bias, the deflection is parametrically amplified causing a much larger deflection, and pull-in instability. A sufficiently large amplification results in unstable equilibrium of deflected paddle wing causing it to snap. This amplified drive mechanism does not consume any power, yet it can magnify the observed deflection by one or two orders of magnitude. This deflection is measured through a profilometer as well as a change in capacitance. We present the theory, fabrication and testing results of these sensors.

TL;DR: A paddle-aided stair-climbing motion is presented for this ePaddle-based robot that can roll on the stair as a traditional wheeled vehicle and also can climb up the stair under the help of its paddles.
Abstract: To gain high mobility on challenging terrains, a mobile robot based on eccentric paddle mechanism (ePaddle) with locomotion versatility has been proposed. In this paper, a paddle-aided stair-climbing motion is presented for this ePaddle-based robot. The robot can roll on the stair as a traditional wheeled vehicle and also can climb up the stair under the help of its paddles. Robot-stair interaction modes are presented and typical feasible postures of the robot in stair-climbing are discussed. Frictional requirements for the robot to hold a desired posture are evaluated by modelling statics of the robot. Analyzed results reveal that two critical scenarios in wheeled mode occur when the front-wheel is at the bottom of the riser, and when the rear-wheel is at the top of the riser, respectively. In contrast, frictional requirements of the paddle-aided stair-climbing postures confirm that the robot can climb up the stair with all feasible postures by touching the stair with the paddle, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed paddle-aided stair-climbing.

Abstract: High-rate algae ponds (HRAPs) are widely used in increasing biofuel production because of their effective design in terms of cost and power consumption. Using modeling and simulation techniques is an economical approach for improving the design of raceways. Previous modeling studies reported the use of a flat velocity profile, thus failing to depict the real phenomena involved. However, in practice, the rotating paddle wheel in HRAPs produces a pulsating velocity that is necessary for culture growth. In this study, the hydrodynamic characteristics of algal ponds were investigated using a coupling algorithm to map the effects of a two-dimensional paddle wheel on a three-dimensional raceway model. HRAPs with and without paddle wheels were compared in terms of hydrodynamic mixing, dead zones, and power consumption. The results revealed that compared with a flat velocity at the inlet, the pulsating velocity of a paddle wheel produced a large dead zone volume with reduced power consumption, shear stres...

Abstract: This paper presents an implementation of an electrostatic MEMS switch which can be triggered by a very low input voltage in the range of ∼50mV. This device can thus be used as a zero-DC power signal threshold detector suitable for waking up larger battery powered systems. The device consists of an electrically conductive torsional see-saw paddle with four balanced electrodes. The device is symmetrically biased by applying the same voltage at its inner electrodes leading to bistable behavior at flat or collapsed equilibrium positions. The use of elevated symmetric bias softens the springs such that the transition of the paddle state from flat to collapsed can be triggered when a few mV are applied to one of its outer electrode thus causing device snapping in and switch closure.
