Abstract: Fluid velocity local to the dissolving surface will affect the dissolution rate. It is difficult to anticipate what local fluid velocities are present within compendial dissolution apparatuses from set flow rates or stirring rates. A range of qualitative and quantitative velocimetric techniques are available to assess and characterize hydrodynamics. These methods are frequently used in combination with computational fluid dynamics simulations to characterize and simulate hydrodynamics. Dosage form location and motion varies between apparatuses, and the presence of the dosage form itself can impact local hydrodynamics. Each apparatus described has identified hydrodynamic features which may also vary with agitation rate. This review describes the methods used to simulate and characterize hydrodynamics and summarizes some of the main findings from studies investigating hydrodynamics in the paddle, basket, and flowthrough dissolution apparatuses.

Abstract: To accurately estimate the state of the body, the nervous system needs to account for delays between signals from different sensory modalities. To investigate how such delays may be represented in the sensorimotor system, we asked human participants to play a virtual pong game in which the movement of the virtual paddle was delayed with respect to their hand movement. We tested the representation of this new mapping between the hand and the delayed paddle by examining transfer of adaptation to blind reaching and blind tracking tasks. These blind tasks enabled to capture the representation in feedforward mechanisms of movement control. A Time Representation of the delay is an estimation of the actual time lag between hand and paddle movements. A State Representation is a representation of delay using current state variables: the distance between the paddle and the ball originating from the delay may be considered as a spatial shift; the low sensitivity in the response of the paddle may be interpreted as a minifying gain; and the lag may be attributed to a mechanical resistance that influences paddle’s movement. We found that the effects of prolonged exposure to the delayed feedback transferred to blind reaching and tracking tasks and caused participants to exhibit hypermetric movements. These results, together with simulations of our representation models, suggest that delay is not represented based on time, but rather as a spatial gain change in visuomotor mapping.

Abstract: The ability to quantify power within the sport of slalom kayaking would provide coaches and athletes objective data to monitor performance. This study determined the validity of a kayak paddle power meter and subsequent relationship between work rate and stroke kinetics. One participant completed multiple trials of a flat-water, straight-line sprint and a sequence of slalom gates at numerous intensities to attain the velocity:power relationship. Laboratory results identified the kayak paddles’ strain gauges were valid and reliable, and field tests presented a cubic relationship for power as a function of velocity in the straight-line sprint (R2=0.982) and the slalom-specific test (R2=0.993). Further analysis of stroke kinetics identified velocity of hand movement at individual peak force capability to be critical in the highest work rates achieved for both slalom and flat-water sprinting. It was concluded that the kayak paddle power meter tested is a valid means of recording work rate and stroke kinetics during kayaking in the field.

Abstract: Modeling and optimization of key design parameters of bioreactors are critical for development of economically and technically viable algae technologies. The objective of this study is to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to design a novel enclosed Horizontal BioReactor (HBR) equipped with a paddle wheel that incurs low capital and operating costs like raceway ponds, but achieves high productivities like enclosed photobioreactors. For the HBR the aspect ratio (length-to-width), paddle wheel diameter and positioning, culture depth, and baffle spacing can be manipulated to achieve adequate flow of the culture that minimizes the formation of low-velocity areas, below 20 cm/s, termed “dead zones”. The CFD procedure focused on minimizing dead volume and power consumption. A small-scale HBR (3 m2 of surface area) was used for development and validation of the hydrodynamic model, whose parameters were calculated using experimental data. The model was then applied to a pilot-scale HBR (40 m2) that is operated outdoors. Placing the paddle wheel at either end of the reactor or incorporating baffles minimized the dead volume. The same effect was also achieved by increasing the size of the paddle wheel or the number of paddle wheels or the depth of the culture. On the other hand, increasing the reactor's aspect ratio resulted in more dead volume, although it decreased power consumption. These findings will be incorporated into the design of large-scale HBRs (200 m2) for commercial deployment.

Abstract: Introduction Today, reconstructive surgeons offer an array of options to reconstruct the lip defects. Herein we present our experience of using free double-paddle peroneal flaps for extensive lip defect reconstruction. Patients and Methods From 1996 to 2014, 16 patients with extensive lip defects after tumor ablation were included. Free double-paddle peroneal flaps were used for reconstructions. In terms of flap design, one skin paddle superiorly placed on the lateral lower leg was used to reconstruct intraoral defects, whereas the other was inferiorly located and was used to reconstruct extraoral defects. A part of the inner skin paddle was everted, and the suture line with the outer skin paddle became the new vermilion border. A portion of the outer skin paddle could be de-epithelized and tucked into the fold of the inner skin paddle, leading to greater fullness of the new lip. Results Skin paddle sizes were 10–15 cm × 3–13 cm and 4–10.5 cm × 2.5–10.5 cm. Venous thrombosis occurred in one patient but was salvaged, and one flap had superficial necrosis over the outer paddle that was conservatively treated. In the 0.5–33 month follow-up period, all patients were able to close their mouths without obvious drooling. Conclusion Free double-paddle peroneal flap transfer could augment lip definition, deepen the labial vestibule, and provide an acute-angle oral commissure, leading to satisfactory oral competency and improved cosmetic results. Therefore, this technique may be considered a viable option for extensive lip defect reconstruction.

Abstract: In the present investigation we evaluated the effect of stand-up paddle practice on upright postural control in older individuals. Participants were assigned to a group practicing stand-up paddle on seawater or to a walking control group. Balance stability was evaluated in the tandem Romberg and tiptoes postures, comparing the conditions of eyes open versus closed. Results showed that stand-up paddle practice led to reduced anteroposterior and mediolateral amplitudes of body sway in both visual conditions, while walking led to no effect on balance. These results suggest that the challenge of keeping body balance on an unstable board during on-water stand-up paddle practice is transferred to postural tasks performed on a stable support surface, with generalization to sensory and biomechanical conditions different from those experienced during the training. Our results suggest that on-water balance training could be considered as a potential procedure to improve balance control in older adults.

The rotor-wing unmanned aerial vehicle comprises a fuselage and at least two sets of paddle arm assemblies with different specifications, wherein at least two sets of the paddle arm assemblies with the different specifications can be alternately connected with the fuselage; each set of the paddle arm assembly comprises at least one paddle arm, a motor arranged at one end of the paddle arm and a paddle connected with the motor; and each set of the paddle arm assembly is arranged on the outer side of the fuselage and is detachably connected with the fuselage. The rotor-wing unmanned aerial vehicle provided by the embodiment of the invention comprises at least two sets of the paddle arm assemblies with the different specifications; the paddle arm assemblies can be alternately connected with the fuselage; and a user can mount the paddle arm assemblies meeting the requirements or utilization environments according to the requirements or the utilization environments.

Abstract: We describe the development of an open-access database for Swift Creek Complicated Stamped ceramics, a type of pottery common to Georgia, eastern Alabama, and northern Florida in the Middle and Late Woodland periods between ca. cal A.D. 100 and 800. The characteristic stamped designs on Swift Creek pottery, created by impressing a carved paddle into a clay vessel before firing, provide unique signatures that enable archaeologists to identify paddle matches—multiple vessels, sometimes hundreds of kilometers apart, stamped with a single paddle. These paddle matches potentially allow archaeologists to trace social interactions across hundreds of kilometers with high spatial and temporal resolution. To date, however, this potential has been hindered by the limited accessibility and fragmented nature of the dataset of reconstructed designs. The database we describe integrates paddle designs with other pertinent data for identifying paddle matches and their context, including the results of sourcing and technofunctional analyses and absolute dating. We view this database not only as a critical component of our own research, but also as a platform for collaboration among researchers that will facilitate broad syntheses of the region.

Abstract: Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is a rapidly growing sport and recreational activity in which little scientific research exists. A review of the literature failed to identify a single article pertaining to the physiological demands of SUP competition. The purpose of this study was to conduct a performance analysis of a national level SUP marathon race. Ten elite SUP athletes (6 male, 4 female) were recruited from the Stand Up Paddle Surfing Association of Australia to have their race performance in the Australian Titles analyzed. Performance variables included SUP speed, course taken and heart rate, measured with a 15Hz GPS unit. Results demonstrated that there was a variation in distance covered (13.3km-13.9km), peak speed (18.8km/hr-26.4km/hr) and only moderate correlations (r=0.38) of race result to distance covered. Significantly greater amounts of time were spent in 5-10km/hr speed zones (p<0.05) during the race. Peak heart rate varied from 168-208bpm amongst the competitors with the average heart rate was 168.6±9.8bpm. Significantly higher durations were spent in elevated heart rate zones (p<0.05) with participants spending 89.3% of their race within 80-100% of their age-predicted HRmax. Marathon SUP races appear to involve a high aerobic demand, with maintenance of near max heart rates required for the duration of the race. There is a high influence of tactical decisions and extrinsic variables to race results. These results provide a greater understanding of the physiological demands of distance events and may assist in the development of specialised training programs for SUP athletes.

Abstract: The invention belongs to the field of ship propeller thrust control, and particularly relates to a multi-paddle coordination control distribution method for a ship. The method provided by the invention comprises the steps that a ship speed/course expectation value is input through man-machine interaction of a manipulation station, and then is compared with a ship speed/course measured value measured by a GPS/platform compass to acquire a speed/course deviation state quantity; the Lyapunov stability principle is used to design a ship motion controller according to the speed/course deviation state; expected longitudinal and transverse resultant force and heading torque are output to a control distributor; and the control distributor adjusts a propeller thrust control distribution policy, and distributes the expected resultant force/torque output by the motion controller to a number of propeller propulsion devices to generate thrust to propel the ship to move. The control distribution method is easy to implement, is highly efficient, can conveniently carry out modular integration with a high-level motion controller to jointly realize multi-propeller coordination control of the ship.

According to the invention, a three-blade combination mode is adopted, so that the effects of shearing and circulating materials are achieved; under the combined action of the above two flows, the materials added into the reactor can be quickly mixed, so that the energy consumption distribution in a stirring tank is more uniform, thereby realizing efficient utilization of energy; the reactor can solve the problem of wall sticking of the materials near the wall surface; the reactor reinforces heat transfer, promote uniform suspension of granules and is simple in structure; the structure and operation parameters can be easily adjusted; and the reactor is convenient to process, manufacture and install.

Abstract: To accurately estimate the state of the body, the nervous system needs to account for delays between signals from different sensory modalities. To investigate how such delays may be represented in the sensorimotor system, we asked human participants to play a virtual pong game in which the movement of the virtual paddle was delayed with respect to their hand movement. We tested the representation of this new mapping between the hand and the delayed paddle by examining transfer of adaptation to blind reaching and blind tracking tasks. These blind tasks enabled to capture the representation in feedforward mechanisms of movement control. A Time Representation of the delay is an estimation of the actual time lag between hand and paddle movements. A State Representation is a representation of delay using current state variables: the distance between the paddle and the ball originating from the delay may be considered as a spatial shift; the low sensitivity in the response of the paddle may be interpreted as a minifying gain; and the lag may be attributed to a mechanical resistance that influences paddle9s movement. We found that the effects of prolonged exposure to the delayed feedback transferred to blind reaching and tracking tasks and caused participants to exhibit hypermetric movements. These results, together with simulations of our representation models, suggest that delay is not represented based on time, but rather as a spatial gain change in visuomotor mapping.
