Abstract: The full comprehension of the impact with which each force is involved in kayak propulsion is very difficult. The measure of the force on the paddle or the stroke rate only is often not enough for the coach to identify the best actions useful to improve the performances of a kayaker. To this purpose, the synchronous measurement of all parameters involved in the kayak propulsion, both dynamic (force acting on paddle and foot brace) and kinematic (stroke frequency, displacement, velocity, acceleration, roll, yaw, and pitch of the boat) could suggest to the coach more appropriate strategies for better understanding of the paddler’s motion and the relevant effects on the kayak behavior. Some simulation models, as well as measurement systems of increasing complexity, have been proposed in the recent years. In this paper, we present the e-Kayak system: A multichannel Digital Acquisition (DAQ) system specifically customized for flatwater kayaking. The system will be described in depth and its capability investigated through specific measurement results.

Abstract: The dynamic modelling and path following control of a stand up paddle board based unmanned surface vessel, of the type appropriate for bathymetric survey applications, are presented. The dynamic model is based on a 3.35 m (11 foot) inflatable paddle board weighing 15.5 kg (including instrumentation and propulsion system). A super-twisting path following control system is designed to mitigate wind-induced disturbances anticipated to affect a vehicle in the field, and which are expected to be exacerbated by the vessel's low draft, light weight and high windage area. The performance of the system is investigated using simulations of the vehicle following a lawn mower shaped path within an $80\ \mathrm{m}\times 80\ \mathrm{m}$ area. The proposed path following controller is shown to be robust to disturbances that have a magnitude of up to about a third of the total thrust available, and which change rapidly (wind gusts).

Abstract: In the recent past, surface Electromyography (sEMG) signals has been effectively applied in control interfaces for robots, prosthetic hands, legs and other areas. Few works has focused on neck EMG control in spite of the neck being central to human movements and engagements. We propose a neck EMG model that estimates head movements and apply the signals to control a game developed in Unity 3D engine. The game involves randomly falling and accelerating objects. The user slides the games’ player character (paddle) using neck EMG to intercept as many objects. EMG signal is rectified and FIR filtered and used to control the position of a sliding probe of the game in real-time. The paper utilizes an equation model and a Machine Learning model to translate the filtered signal to corresponding neck rotation. From the results, all the subjects reported accuracy of over 70% which confirm the applicability of the interface and ease of use in that there is little or no calibration needed. The control model using equation showed intuitive direction and speed control while the Machine Learning scheme offered more stable direction control but limited speed control of the sliding paddle. The control interface can be applied in multiple areas that involve neck activity e.g. in rehabilitation as well as gaming interface to enable entertainment for the disabled.

According to the device disclosed by the invention, a first paddle blade or a second paddle blade can be properly selected for propelling according to the depth of seawater, so that the problems that the existing marine propeller cannot stretch up and down, cannot effectively adapt to complex terrains, and cannot be properly adjusted for a navigation area with large draft change so as to cause poor drawing force, slow navigational speed and weak wind resistance and easily damage the propeller can be solved; and the propellers are arranged on each of the two sides below the tail of the ship, one propeller rotates leftwards, and the other propeller rotates rightwards, so that the towing force of the advancing of the ship can be effectively improved through the arrangement mode so as to synchronously increase the navigational speed, the wind resistance is high, and the ship can keep power when one propeller breaks down so as to effectively improve the practicability.

The system includes an actuator assembly to operate the assist cylinder from manual actuators, such as paddles, located approximately in four corners of table top. The system may include a pair of paddle assemblies mounted under the table top on opposite sides of said assist cylinder. The paddle assemblies may be coupled to the assist cylinder by a linear linkage that translates pivotal movement of a paddle into linear movement sufficient to actuate the assist cylinder. The linear linkage may include a straight drive rod coupled to one paddle assembly and an offset drive rod coupled to the other paddle assembly. The linear linkage may also include a pivot arm to reverse movement of the offset drive rod.

Abstract: Introduction Lead migration has been regarded as a frequent complication after percutaneous spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Thus far, repeated reinsertion of leads or replacement of paddle electrodes after removing percutaneous leads has been performed, but a salvage surgical technique using the remaining electrode has not been reported. Here, we describe a case in which unilateral lead migration was successfully treated with the insertion of a paddle electrode. Case summary A 44-year-old male paraplegic patient with chronic neuropathic pain in the right leg and low back for 7 years underwent a percutaneous spinal cord stimulation procedure 5 times over 2 years because of repeated unilateral lead migration. The left lead underwent repeated migration and was difficult to reinsert due to epidural adhesion. After confirming the position and stimulation area of the remaining lead, we decided to insert another paddle electrode beside the remaining lead. We performed a T10 laminotomy and inserted a paddle electrode on the right side, using it in combination with the previous left lead. After surgery, the patient was satisfied with a wide coverage area. Discussion We recommend salvage additional paddle electrode insertion rather than removing both leads during revision SCS. This surgical method increases the possibility of covering the dorsal column (DC) of the spinal cord, is cost effective, and decreases the possibility of failing to cover dorsal column using the paddle electrode during open surgery because the remaining lead's position and stimulation area guide the insertion of the additional paddle lead.

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000–000, 2020—The purpose of this study was to test the validity of alternative protocols,mean velocity during 30minutes of continuous effort (V30min) and critical velocity (CV), to estimate the anaerobic threshold in stand-uppaddle (SUP). Eight athletes performed: 3maximal efforts at 400-, 500-, and800m distances to determine CV values, using the distance-time relationship; 3 efforts at 85, 90, and 100% of maximal 500-m effort to determine the velocity related to 3.5 mmol·L of lactate, assumed as the onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA) and; a 30minute continuous effort to determine theV30min. All evaluationswere separatedby 48 hours,with the athletes using their ownboards and paddles in the water. No differenceswere observed between theOBLA (2.356 0.13m·s) and alternativemethods (CV: 2.426 0.20m·s; p5 0.10 andV30min: 2.326 0.13m·s; p5 0.63). Although strong correlationswere observed between theOBLAand alternativemethods (CV: r5 0.84 and V30min: r5 0.94), the limits of agreementwere higher in CV (60.23m·s) than V30min (60.08 m·s). These results demonstrate that both the CV and V30min are valid to estimate the OBLA. In view of the specificity of SUP and the high levels of agreement, the use of the V30min is recommended to prescribe training intensities.

Abstract: The bouncing ball system is a simple mechanical collision system that has been extensively studied for several decades. In this study, we investigate the bouncing ball’s dynamics both numerically and experimentally. We implement the system using a table tennis ball and paddle vibrated by a shaker. We focus on the relationship between the ball’s maximum bounce height in the long time interval and the paddle’s vibration frequency, observing several stepwise height changes for frequencies of 25–50 Hz, noting this significant characteristic in both our experiments and numerical simulations. We concentrate on this paddle frequency interval because the phenomenon is easy to handle in numerical simulations. Because the observed phenomenon has a simple order, it can be universal and appear in a large class of collision dynamics. Possibly, some researchers have investigated the bouncing ball system in which the nonsmooth maximum bounce height changes occur. However, they may have failed to notice the changes because the maximal height of the ball was not considered.
