Abstract: A dual mechanical movement scanning system for ion implantation includes a radial scan arm which is mounted at a fixed pivot point external to the system vacuum chamber and penetrates the chamber and supports the wafer paddle or wheel within the chamber. The fast-scan component is provided by rotation of the paddle on the support arm; the slow-scan component is provided by pivotal movement of the scan arm itself. The drive system which reciprocally pivots the radial scan arm is configured geometrically so that controlled movement of one arm of the drive system is translated as l/r velocity of the rotational axis relative to the beam path. The wafer paddle can be constructed to provide a variable implant angle and to use a component of centrifugal force to hold the wafers in place without clamps or other mechanical means.

Abstract: A mammographic compression and positioning device which is independent of the x-ray system utilized to produce images of an object being examined. A slide assembly is movable along a vertical post member which is adjustably secured to a base member. A compression paddle is coupled to the slide assembly and has a curved lower surface which, upon contacting the object, exerts a variable compressive force thereon. The position of the compression paddle is adjustable in a plurality of directions, allowing the paddle to be exactly positioned whereby an image of a selected object view may be obtained. The compression paddle is transparent enabling the user of the device to visualize the object being compressed and to take the steps necessary to provide initial image results which are satisfactory thereby reducing the number of reimages which normally would be required.

Abstract: To investigate the biomechanics of flatwater kayaking, the technique of nine Olympic caliber K-1 paddlers was analyzed using cinematographic and computer procedures. Results indicated that, during paddle-water contact, the horizontal arm action was one of push-then-pull with the push coming from the arm farthest from the water (thrust segments) followed by the pull coming from the arm closest to the water (draw segments). During this action, the center of paddle rotation shifted up the paddle shaft as the stroke progressed, which increased the time the paddle was in the power phase of the stroke. The horizontal movement patterns of the individual segments indicated that the push was accomplished by an integrated movement of the thrust wrist and elbow, with minimal shoulder involvement. Subsequently, the pull was accomplished by an integrated movement of the draw wrist, elbow, shoulder, as well as the thrust shoulder. During the latter stages of water contact, since the performers were unable to generate additional useful power, the paddle was rapidly withdrawn to avoid dragging. Subject stability in the frontal plane was maintained by shifting the body mass toward the water contact side at paddle entry and away from it at exit. This action opposed the vertical forces produced as a by-product of the stroke. The final outcome of this stroke technique was the maintenance of the body center of gravity velocity while the boat oscillated under the performer.

Abstract: A needle assembly for introduction of a paddle style lead near a spinal column of a patient includes a body having a proximal end and a distal end, a lumen with a continuous oblong cross section, and a paddle style lead adapted to accept a stiffening member. The distal end of the body has an introducer portion where the top side of the introducer has an orifice to allow for protrusion of the paddle style lead from the lumen into the spinal column area. The needle has a hub affixed to the proximal end of the body which is adapted to receive a stylet. The needle may also have a stylet that is inserted within the lumen. The introducer of the needle has a curvature extending from the bottom side toward the top side at the distal end and guides the introduction of the paddle style lead near the spinal column.
