TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose an albuming method that includes the automatic adaptation of the page layout of a plurality of images to a boundary condition of an event, based on event-determining information that relates to one or more events to which the images pertain.
Abstract: An albuming method includes the automatic adaptation of the page layout of a plurality of images to a boundary condition of an event. The method includes the steps of receiving a plurality of images having event-determining information that relates to one or more events to which the images pertain and the generation of an event boundary based on the on the event-determining information. The images for each event are then laid out into a page format adapted to the event boundary determined for that event. For example, if the page format is determined to have a maximum number of images per page, and if the number of images remaining for the last page are fewer than the maximum number, the page layout of the last or more pages of the event is automatically adapted to the event boundary by, e.g., adjusting the arrangement of the pictures on the last page.

TL;DR: This paper gives a detailed description of a constraint-based style sheet model, CCSS, which is compatible with virtually all of the CSS 2.0 specification and allows the designer to provide multiple layouts that better meet the desires of the user and environmental restrictions.
Abstract: Cascading Style Sheets have been introduced by the W3C as a mechanism for controlling the appearance of HTML documents. In this paper, we demonstrate how constraints provide a powerful unifying formalism for declaratively understanding and specifying style sheets for web documents. With constraints we can naturally and declaratively specify complex behavior such as inheritance of properties and cascading of conflicting style rules. We give a detailed description of a constraint-based style sheet model, CCSS, which is compatible with virtually all of the CSS 2.0 specification. It allows more flexible specification of layout, and also allows the designer to provide multiple layouts that better meet the desires of the user and environmental restrictions. We also describe a prototype extension of the Amaya browser that demonstrates the feasibility of CCSS.

TL;DR: In this article, a computer-based method and system for guiding a user through the process of positioning a set of graphical components within a container in a manner that guarantees that a satisfactory layout will be obtained if such a layout is possible, no matter what placements are selected by the user.
Abstract: A computer-based method and system for guiding a user through the process of positioning a set of graphical components within a container in a manner that guarantees that a satisfactory layout will be obtained if such a layout is possible, no matter what placements are selected by the user. This method and system provide an interactive and automated page layout that is generated without trial and error on the part of the user, while allowing the user to exercise choice when such choice is not in conflict with the goal of obtaining a satisfactory layout, where a satisfactory layout is defined as one for which i) no components overlap, ii) the entire area available within the container is occupied by the components, iii) the constraints on size associated with each individual component are satisfied, and iv) the non-constraining preferences regarding size and location that are associated with each component are respected whenever they are not in conflict with user choices and component constraints.

TL;DR: In this paper, a genetic algorithm approach with an embedded simulation model is proposed for facility layout design of pharmaceutical factories, which allows the user to select the objectives that are important in each particular layout design in the pharmaceutical industry.
Abstract: In the layout design of pharmaceutical factories, several important objectives often need to be considered, such as operation cost, maintenance cost, material handing cost, throughput rate, etc. Most of the existing algorithms for facility layout design were developed based on pre-determined single objectives; namely, the distance-based objectives or the adjacency-based objectives. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm approach with an embedded simulation model which allows the user to select the objectives that are important in each particular layout design in the pharmaceutical industry. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, the layout designs of two pharmaceutical plants for solid dosage forms were used as a test bed. One represents a typical small-size pharmaceutical plant and the other represents a medium-size plant. The objectives are to maximize throughput rate and to minimize travelling time per trip. A simulation model was developed, and the efficiency of the layouts generated...

TL;DR: An interchange algorithm is described, in which the fixture locators are generated sequentially first and are further improved, and the algorithm uses the D-optimality criterion to minimize the workpiece positioning error.
Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to the problem of fixture layout design for 3D workpieces. The approach is based on a concept of optimum experiment design, and the problem is treated as an optimal aggregation to select optimal locators from an initial collection of a large number of fixel locations on the surfaces of the given workpiece and to achieve form-closure for the part. An interchange algorithm is described, in which the fixture locators are generated sequentially first and are further improved. The algorithm uses the D-optimality criterion to minimize the workpiece positioning error. An example of turbine airfoil is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

TL;DR: In this paper, the additional information can be combined only on a page unit basis with a page layout in which a plurality of pages are combined to one sheet and when the formation of one physical page is finished, additional information of each physical page are combined.
Abstract: Additional information can be combined only on a page unit basis with a page layout in which a plurality of pages are combined to one sheet. In case of outputting spooled print data, the additional information is first divided into the additional information in which an object to be added is logical pages and the additional information in which an object to be added is a physical page. When a plurality of logical pages are combined into one physical page, additional information is combined every logical page. When the formation of one physical page is finished, additional information of each physical page is combined.

TL;DR: In this article, a style template is selected for a predetermined region of a web page layout, such as a horizontal region spanning an entire width of the web page, and the selected style template includes at least one HTML code defining a style of the style template and can include a space for information related to the style.
Abstract: A method for generating a hypertext markup language (HTML) page in which a style template is selected for a predetermined region of a web page layout. The predetermined region of the web page layout is a horizontal region spanning an entire width of the web page layout. The selected style template can be, for example, a title template, a text template, an audio template, a picture template, a parallel column template or a navigational bar template, and is selected by selecting a graphical icon representing the style of the template. The selected style template includes at least one HTML code defining a style of the style template and can include a space for information that is related to the style of the style template. Information related to the style of the template, such as a title, text, hypertext link information, a pointer to a file containing information that is to be inserted into the selected template, image information, graphical information and/or audio information, is inserted into the space before uploading the finished web page layout to a server. Typically, a plurality of selected style templates are concatenated to generate the finished web page layout. A finished web page layout is then uploaded to the server.

TL;DR: A methodology is defined for automatically inputting the physical system components used to describe an AMHS within a simulation language based on data extraction from a CAD layout file of the system.
Abstract: Simulation is a popular tool for accurately estimating the performance of an automated material handling system (AMHS). Accuracy of the model is normally dependent on a detailed description of the AMHS physical system components and their coordinate positions. In this paper, a methodology is defined for automatically inputting the physical system components used to describe an AMHS within a simulation language. The method is based on data extraction from a CAD layout file of the system. Automatically generating the physical system components reduces simulation model building time and increases model accuracy.

TL;DR: The process of specifying logical structure and effect of imposing stylistic limitations on page layout are described and the resulting recognition process is more accurate and faster than the unassisted version.
Abstract: We are developing a document recognition system that can be tunably optimized for performance on documents of specific styles. We interactively generate XML to encode specific knowledge about a class of documents to be input to a recognition system. The encoding includes attributes of document logical structure as well as layout structure constraints. The encoding of document style is used to augment the processes of page segmentation, layout analysis, and character recognition. This paper describes the process of specifying logical structure and effect of imposing stylistic limitations on page layout. The resulting recognition process is more accurate and faster than the unassisted version. Recognition results are enhanced by incorporating into the output representation information on the logical structure.

TL;DR: This application builds a neural expert system with the capability of incrementally learning layout design examples for a given set of constraints, and creates effective multibidirectional generalization behavior from qualitative, goal-driven layout design experience.
Abstract: The major contribution of this novel application is the pilot development and feasibility study for a bank of cascade BAM (Bidirectional Associative Memories) neural networks. This improved BAM structure functions as an expert system for conceptual facility layout or for preliminary construction layout design. This application, rather than being a better analytical algorithm or a better production expert system, builds a neural expert system with the capability of incrementally learning layout design examples for a given set of constraints. The cascade BAM incremental learning methodology, which distinguishes this system from the more frequently used Backpropagation Network (BPN) learning system, creates effective multibidirectional generalization behavior from qualitative, goal-driven layout design experience. The initial tests of learnability are presented by its applicability to conceptual layout design problems, and their solutions are assessed and compared with the learning ability of a standard BAM. Issues deserving further investigation are addressed as well.

TL;DR: The prototype artist biography information system DArt is presented, a system for automatically producing multimodal pages of information that appropriately combine textual and graphical representation styles that builds on an architectural synthesis of data-driven aggregation in information visualization and communicative-goal oriented natural language generation.
Abstract: In this paper we present the prototype artist biography information system DArt , a system for automatically producing multimodal pages of information that appropriately combine textual and graphical representation styles. We concentrate particularly on the selection and function of layout in these pages and demonstrate that layout offers a rich resource for achieving presentational coherence. Layout mechanisms have been developed on the basis of an empirical investigation of professionally produced layouts. These decompose communicative goal structures into layout structures that constrain the placement of automatically generated graphical, diagrammatic and textual elements. Our system builds on an architectural synthesis of data-driven aggregation in information visualization and communicative-goal oriented natural language generation. The paper introduces the component technologies employed, describes the methodology adopted for the empirical investigation of multimodal page layout, and shows the results as implemented within DArt .

TL;DR: In this article, a print page layout direction is determined to minimize the length in the sheet feeding direction based on the number of printing pages, the size of individual printing page and the width of roll paper.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform printing usefully onto a sheet larger than a print page by detecting the number of printing pages for each print request and determining a print page layout direction to minimize the length in the sheet feeding direction based on the number of printing pages. SOLUTION: Upon receiving a print request from an AP, a print managing section 11 stores a print data temporarily in a buffer 17 and operates the number of printing pages for each print request. A layout processing section 14 operates the length in the sheet feeding direction based on the number of printing pages, the size of individual printing page and the width of roll paper and then determines page layout direction and position where that length is minimized. Subsequently, a cutting time estimating section 15 determines the cutting time for each print line. The print managing section 11 performs control code conversion and transfers it to a large size printer 2 through a transfer processing section 18. Roll paper can be saved by performing that operation for each print request.

TL;DR: Despite originally being designed for interpreting circuit diagrams, it is argued that it can be adapted to form reader, provided a document type classifier is implemented.
Abstract: The paper investigates strategies for handling smeared documents. Smeared documents are considered documents that acquired imprints from sources not included in the original preparation of the document or as a result of the limitations of the conversion process to digital format. For example, smudges, blemishes or dirt from manhandling, neglect or other sources such as base of coffee mugs. It is suggested that a template of the original document serves as the basis for recognition of the class of document such as a form or a multi-column page of text. Classification can take place according to the layout form and textual content. The modules that could form such a system could include, deskewing, text/graphics segmentation, OCR, page layout and document understanding. The paper highlights a few of the strategies that have been proposed to carry out these tasks. For example, hierarchical Hough transform is suggested for deskewing as it is robust against noise. An optimised segmentation scheme has been proposed to produce partitioned blocks and classified in a goal driven manner using a decision tree. The paper also highlights the limitations of the current system that converts scanned schematics to textual description files. Despite originally being designed for interpreting circuit diagrams, it is argued that it can be adapted to form reader, provided a document type classifier is implemented. (6 pages)

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save the labor for selection operation at printing by selecting a part of a plurality of texts. SOLUTION: A printing select control part reads out a select information file 105 for printing from a recording medium-reproducing apparatus. The select information 105 for printing includes a page layout information 201 and a plurality of select image informations 202. The page layout information 201 specifies in which layout photographic images are to be printed. The select image informations regulate file names of images selected as objects to be printed, and printing attributes related to the images (for example, an image pickup place, an image pickup year, month and day). The printing select control part 22 determines a printing format on the basis of the select information 105 for printing, takes out data of images to be printed, further reads out additional attribute information and supplies desired printing data to a printing engine.
