TL;DR: An optimization model of the quantifiable aspects of architectural floorplan layout design that takes advantage of the efficiency of gradient-based algorithms and uses evolutionary algorithms to make discrete decisions and do global search.
Abstract: This article presents an optimization model of the quantifiable aspects of architectural floorplan layout design, and a companion article presents a method for integrating mathematical optimization and subjective decision making during conceptual design. The model presented here offers a new approach to floorplan layout optimization that takes advantage of the efficiency of gradient-based algorithms, where appropriate, and uses evolutionary algorithms to make discrete decisions and do global search. Automated optimization results are comparable to other methods in this research area, and the new formulation makes it possible to integrate the power of human decision-making into the process.

TL;DR: In this paper, a presentation skeleton file can be used to generate XSLT style sheets for many devices that use the same mark-up language and demonstrate Web sites statically before constructing them for real.
Abstract: Device-type-specific XSLT style sheets (or equivalent) are generated from page layout files or ‘presentation skeleton’ files which define a Web page layout including abstract component references that can be mapped to complex, device-specific or repeated style sheet components and are more easily constructed than XSLT style sheets. The presentation skeleton files use and extend existing mark-up languages. One presentation skeleton file can be used to generate XSLT style sheets for many devices that use the same mark-up language. In addition, presentation skeleton files can be produced directly from storyboard files to demonstrate Web sites statically before constructing them for real. This provides a route from initial Web site design to final implementation for multiple output devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated approach to the facilities and material handling system design is proposed, where a genetic approach is proposed to individuate the locations of the departments, the positions of the pickup/delivery stations and the direction of the flow-path.
Abstract: The facility layout problem involves the optimal location of manufacturing facilities into a workshop. The classical approach to the layout design is carried out in two separate steps: the first step is the construction of the block layout, i.e. the location of the departments into the workshop, and the second step is the design of the material handling system. The separate optimization of these two aspects of the problem leads to solutions that can be far from the total optimum. In this paper, an integrated approach to the facilities and material handling system design is proposed. Referring to a physical model, named the bay structure , and to a unidirectional AGV system, a genetic approach is proposed to individuate the locations of the departments, the positions of the pickup/delivery stations and the direction of the flow-path. The minimization of material handling cost is adopted as optimality criterion.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method to generate a style sheet comprising the steps of first determining a set of layout constraints such as design criteria to act as soft constraints or additionally include the requirements of a particular output device.
Abstract: What is disclosed is a system and method to generate a style sheet comprising the steps of first determining a set of layout constraints such as design criteria to act as ‘soft’ constraints or could additionally include the requirements of a particular output device. Alternatively, the constraints could be explicitly specified or expressed as properties of a good layout design. Next, the present method has the step of representing the style properties of the document as problem variables. These variables could advantageously include font, text line, or color properties in addition to positioning properties including graphical style. Then, solving the constraint problem and outputting the generated style properties in the form of a style sheet wherein the style sheet is a Cascaded Style Sheet (CSS) or an Extensible Style Language (XSL) specification.

TL;DR: In this paper, the integration of unit load and material-handling considerations in a facility layout design is presented based on a stochastic model that captures the operational characteristics of the manufacturing system and a nonlinear mixed-integer program that incorporates a department formation and facility layout.
Abstract: The effectiveness of a layout design cannot be completely measured if the operational characteristics of the manufacturing system are ignored. There is, therefore, a need to develop integrated manufacturing system design models. In this paper, the integration of unit load and material-handling considerations in a facility layout design is presented. This integration is based on a stochastic model that captures the operational characteristics of the manufacturing system and a nonlinear mixed-integer program that incorporates a department formation and facility layout. The non-linear mixed-integer program is solved using a simulated annealing-based algorithm. Analytical results for different manufacturing system scenarios are presented and compared with results obtained using alternative QAP-type formulations. Based on our experiments and the characteristics of the different formulations, key observations are presented and discussed.

TL;DR: A user interface system for composing a layout of an image page suitable for display on a display device includes a user interface image generator and a command processor for initiating incorporation of both the first and second image elements in the image page, the second image element being located within the first image element, in response to user selection of corresponding parent and child items as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A user interface system supports organization of hierarchies of image elements for incorporation in an XML (or other language) data specification. The system further supports generation of image representative code from the data specification and associated ancillary specifications including label, tool tip, help and history specification data, for example. A user interface system for composing a layout of an image page suitable for display on a display device includes a user interface image generator. The generator provides data representing a displayable image window indicating a hierarchical organization of items representing image elements available to be included in an image page. The hierarchical organization of items links a parent item representing a first image element with a child item representing a second image element to be contained within the first image element. The system also includes a user interface command processor for initiating incorporation of both the first and second image elements in the image page, the second image element being located within the first image element, in response to user selection of corresponding parent and child items in the image window.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mask layout is designed and verified incrementally to help reduce the amount of time to produce the mask layout, and the resulting mask set is then used to manufacture a mask set to help print the target pattern in manufacturing integrated circuits (ICs).
Abstract: A lithography mask layout is designed and verified incrementally to help reduce the amount of time to produce the mask layout. For one embodiment, a layout defining a target pattern may be processed to produce a mask layout, and the mask layout may be verified to identify errors. Rather than processing and verifying the entire mask layout for error correction over one or more subsequent iterations, sub-layouts having errors may be removed or copied from the mask layout for separate processing and verification. Because the amount of data defining a sub-layout is relatively small, the time to design and verify the mask layout is reduced. The resulting mask layout having one or more processed and verified sub-layout(s) may then be used to manufacture a mask set to help print the target pattern in manufacturing integrated circuits (ICs), for example.

Abstract: This paper deals with the warehouse layout optimization problem with respect to the distance reduction and the travel time minimization. The authors also searched for a flexible tool in order to optimize layout functionally to the fluctuations in demand and inventory level. The addressed optimization problem is a constrained optimization problem on an integer domain and it is shown to be NP-hard. The wide applicability of evolutionary computation and its good performances on a variety of different optimization problems have led to a strong interest in this type of algorithm. A heuristic genetic algorithm have been developed and a system for the effective assignment of the storage area to the different class of items is presented. The system is based on the association of a genetic algorithm and a deterministic simulation model. Computational experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. They were made by applying the proposed tool to a real industrial case concerning an Italian soft drinks company. As a result, the authors intend to provide a tool for warehouse layout and operations optimization that could be attractive for operation management researchers and realistically applicable by practitioners.

Abstract: With the trend in modern naval ships towards less dense payloads, space layout design has become more important. Recent advances in computing science and increased understanding of methods for developing mathematical models, which form the basis of the space layout design, have helped with the development of a powerful design procedure. In this study, the compartment layout problem, which can be regarded as the space layout design of a naval ship, is represented as a mathematical model, and a compartment layout algorithm based on the genetic algorithm (GA) in order to solve the problem is proposed. Comparative testing shows that the proposed algorithm performs better than other existing algorithms for the optimal compartment layout design. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to the compartment layout problem of a naval ship and the computational results are compared with the actual compartment layout of the naval ship.

TL;DR: A page, layout analyser that uses typical common features present in most of the Indian scripts is introduced that can distinguish text regions from non-textual entities such as images, rulers, and noisy signals due to smudges and poor quality of the paper.
Abstract: An advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system is equipped with the module of the page layout analyser. It separates textual zones from non-textual zones. It identifies textual blocks from multicolumn documents and groups them into homogenous regions in terms of geometric shape and spatial distribution. All existing OCR modules developed for various Indian scripts can handle text only single-column documents. In this paper, a page, layout analyser that uses typical common features present in most of the Indian scripts is introduced. A simple compatibility criterion that allows various degrees of homogeneity is defined. The page-analyser is robust in the sense that it can distinguish text regions from non-textual entities such as images, rulers, and noisy signals due to smudges and poor quality of the paper. Test results are shown in two most popular Indian Scripts, Devnagari (Hindi) and Bangla.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a CAD tool that can quickly generate multiple versions of analog CMOS IC layouts for parasitic extraction and post-layout simulation, which can be used for post-layout simulation and layout optimization.
Abstract: Layout design is a very important step of the analog CMOS IC design flow. Good layout quality featuring low susceptibility to digital noise and low sensitivity to process variation requires layout designers with significant expertise. The layout optimization process needs new CAD tools that will quickly generate multiple versions of analog CMOS IC layouts for parasitic extraction and post-layout simulation. We propose a new CAD tool that will produce analog CMOS layout modules in a given CMOS process. Multiple use of the tool with different control parameters results in obtaining several versions of CMOS layout modules of a single circuit. These layouts can be used for post-layout simulation and layout optimization. This paper presents the tool's architecture and examples of its use for analog CMOS layout design.

Abstract: In a manufacturing layout, it is widely agreed that the design of the layout and aisles for material handling needs to be considered simultaneously. This paper presents an integrated method to optimize the manufacturing layout and aisle structure by simulated annealing. In the method, the layout design problem is represented as a slicing floorplan and the slicing lines in the floorplan are used as the aisle structure for the material-handling system. A new representation for a sliced floorplan is provided so that it can be handled by simulated annealing to perform the optimization. The method minimizes the material-handling cost, which is calculated by the aisle distances between delivery stations, while designing the aisle structure at the same time.

Abstract: When multiple pages of a document are condensed and printed on a single sheet of printing media, an image data generator condenses the page image data by a prescribed reduction ratio. A sequence information overlayer overlays layout sequence information such as numerals or arrows, or borders or shading of different densities or colors, on the condensed image data. A recording device prints the condensed image data and overlaid sequence information on the single sheet of printing media. The reader of the condensed document recognizes the condensed page sequence from the overlaid sequence information, and can therefore always tell which page to read next. A print sample image of the single sheet preferably includes a sequence line graphically illustrating the page layout sequence.

TL;DR: In this paper, a data processing system includes a data memory, in which data are stored, the data representing a set of predetermined geometrical basic forms and the data corresponding to the basic forms can be altered during the layout design by application of the geometric operations.
Abstract: A data processing system includes a data memory, in which data are stored, the data representing a set of predetermined geometrical basic forms and a set of geometrical operations that can be applied to the basic forms. The basic forms form place markers for electronic components in the layout. In other words, each component is represented by a geometrical basic form or a combination of a plurality of geometrical basic forms. The basic forms can be altered during the layout design by application of the geometrical operations. Such alteration creates a large margin of freedom in the design. On the other hand, the unaltered original basic forms are examined for verification of the layout design. As a result, the verification is simplified and “dummy” errors that are often a consequence of the complexity of a design are avoided. A method for designing the layout with the system is also provided.
