TL;DR: In this article, a methodology of fixture layout optimisation carried out in consideration of the repeatability, immobility and stability of fixturing is presented, where the locator layout is optimised based on the criteria of workpiece repeatability and location accuracy.
Abstract: Fixture layout including locator layout and clamp layout plays a vital role in fixture performance. Current researches have been focused on fixtures for components with regular geometry, the results of which are not always applicable for components with complex geometry. This paper presents a methodology of fixture layout optimisation carried out in consideration of the repeatability, immobility and stability of fixturing. The locator layout is optimised based on the criteria of workpiece repeatability and location accuracy. The clamp layout optimisation offers a method to minimize the magnitude of the clamping force. The procedure of clamp optimisation is (1) to find the feasible clamping position in terms of the immobility requirement; (2) to get the best clamp among the feasible clamping positions under constraint of the stability. The optimal fixture layout is considered in a global range and is especially suitable for the workpiece with complex surfaces. A fixture layout design for the aerofoil of a turbine blade is analysed as an example, and the optimal fixture layout is demonstrated.

Abstract: A manufacturing facility operates in a dynamic environment where the production rates and product mix are continuously changing. Hence, it is often necessary to analyse and redesign the layout. Existing methods for redesign use multiple, static, and tabular from-to charts. A new tool, 'Dynamic From Between Chart' (DFBC), for the analysis of redesign of layouts has been developed. This tool models the production rate changes using a continuous function. The development process of the new tool, the formulation of the cost function and its application to solving the dynamic layout problems for multiple time periods is presented.

TL;DR: Algorithms for rapid generation of moderate-fidelity structural finite element models of air vehicle structures to allow more accurate weight estimation earlier in the vehicle design process have been developed.
Abstract: ‡Algorithms for rapid generation of moderate-fidelity structural finite element models of air vehicle structures to allow more accurate weight estimation earlier in the vehicle design process have been developed. Application of these algorithms should help to rapidly assess and generate many structural layouts before the start of the preliminary design phase and reduce weight penalties imposed when actual structure weights exceed those estimated during conceptual design. By defining the structural topology in a fully parametric manner, the structure can be mapped to arbitrary vehicle configurations being considered during conceptual design optimization. Recent enhancements to this approach include the porting of the algorithms to a platform-independent software language Python, and modifications to specifically consider morphing aircraft-type configurations. Two sample cases which illustrate these recent developments are presented. I. Introduction HE application of multidisciplinary optimization to aero-structural design of flight vehicle structures has been a topic of considerable attention in recent years. Computational mesh generation has advanced considerably and has been used to allow parametric aerodynamic design of vehicle shapes to be considered in this optimization process. However, the structural layout design has not been typically treated with the same level of detail. In most cases, the structural layout is fixed and only a structural sizing optimization is performed. In the few instances where the layout is considered as a variable itself, the model chosen is usually overly simplistic, not representative of actual vehicle designs, and suspect from an accuracy perspective. Aircraft manufacturers have very accurate structural models of existing vehicles, but these models take literally months to generate and are not suitable for rapid consideration of candidate designs. Thus, there is a need for a methodology to create structural models of at least intermediate fidelity while incorporating the ability to generate these models automatically based on a parametric description of the structural layout. This will facilitate the application of these models to rapid generation and assessment of candidate external vehicle shapes. As a first step towards developing this automatic model generation capability, an abstraction of the aircraft structural elements and their layout was constructed so that models could be created quickly for a given structural layout regardless of changes in external shape. This abstraction was based on a thorough study of structural design trends in modern aircraft of various types 1 . Based on this abstraction, some initial algorithms to allow mapping of parametric structural topologies to arbitrary wing shapes were developed. These algorithms allow a structural designer to specify a layout in parametric terms, specifying locations in percentages of span and chord rather than actual dimensions. This specification is independent of the aircraft geometry so that upon making a change to the

TL;DR: An efficient and robust placement algorithm for solving the classic NP-complete rectangle packing problem that is often encountered in various layout design work domains is proposed and compared with some popular existing algorithms.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new effective and robust algorithm for solving the classic NP-complete rectangle packing problem that is often encountered in various layout design work domains. The complexity and subjectivity in most layout design applications indicate the need for providing advanced design and analysis support to layout designers in order to facilitate the procurement of a superior solution in a timely manner. An automated system for providing efficient and easy ways of generating and analysing superior layout alternatives seems to be a logical choice in this direction. In this regard, various metaheuristics are known to be effective solution techniques. However, the efficiency of such techniques is largely determined by the efficiency and efficacy of the decoding placement algorithms employed. Here we propose an efficient and robust placement algorithm and compare it with some popular existing algorithms. Various quantitative fitness metrics and subjective evaluation of the aesthetic value of lay...

TL;DR: In this article, a Web layout mining system is proposed to mine the most popular web-layouts from the Internet database and design a web-layout that is near to acceptable and have all the marks and features of modern requirements.
Abstract: The problem in designing of modern Website projects is to produce contents according to the latest trends and styles. The common Website editors just help to draw the intended layouts but the problem is to design the accurate Web layout according to the demand and latest trends and style. This approach is useful when the user has a specific layout already in mind and is familiar with the Web page layout principles as to what kinds of layouts are possible. It is intrinsically difficult for particularly those who have limited artistic and creative abilities to design good layout from scratch which is acceptable in every respect. An automated system is required that has ability to mine the layouts of the desired type of Websites. The designed system for "Web layout mining (WLM)" helps to mine the most popular web-layouts from the Internet database and design a Web-layout that is near to acceptable and have all the marks and features of modern requirements. The designed system actually bases on a rule based algorithm which helps the user to search out some samples related to his Website category and afterwards the user himself chooses a desired Web-layout and designs its own one with proper implications and variations according to his own requirements.

Abstract: The Constrained Run-Length Algorithm (CRLA) is a well-known technique for page segmentation. The algorithm is very efficient for partitioning documents with Manhattan layouts but not suited to deal with complex layout pages, e.g. irregular graphics embedded in a text paragraph. Its main drawback is to use only local information during the smearing stage, which may lead to erroneous linkage of text and graphics. This paper presents a solution to this problem by adding global information into the process of the CRLA. This enhanced CRLA can be applied to non-Manhattan page layout successfully. It can also extract text surrounded by a box. Both cases cannot be processed by the original CRLA.

TL;DR: In this paper, a concurrent design process consisting of performing layout design and simultaneous shape morphing of some select components is adopted to replace the traditional sequential design approach to improve design efficiency and reduce design cost.
Abstract: This work focuses on incorporating component shape design into a vehicle configuration design or layout process. A concurrent design process consisting of performing layout design and simultaneous shape morphing of some select components is adopted to replace the traditional sequential design approach. The objective is to improve design efficiency and reduce design cost. Two important issues in the packing optimization with shape morphing problem are identified and studied: the morphing and the optimization. A parameterization-based morphing method and a mesh-based morphing method are implemented, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. To efficiently solve this complex problem, it is proposed to decompose it into a bi-level formulation: system level and component level. At the system level, the given functional objectives of the layout design problem are optimized with respect to component positions and orientations. At the component level, the shape of select components is morphed to minimize the overlap with other objects and the enclosure. By iterating between these two levels, the original problem is solved. This bi-level approach is intended to overcome the complexity of performing the placement simultaneously with the shape morphing.Copyright © 2006 by ASME
